Looking at buying this, it's a factory engraved S serial number 27-2, 3.5 barrel in box with presentation case. I don't know who engraved it, but it looks really well done. Does anyone know what the value range of this would be?

It has been shot, but in excellent shape.

Thanks in advance

That is a very nicely engraved 27-2. I would agree with Bill that it was most likely engraved by Russ Smith, probably in the late 1960s and that the value is in the range of $5K plus or minus, with the plus if it is an auction and subject to a couple of bidders who need/want that gun in their collection. I know that I would be a buyer of that gun at $5K, but then again I have a sickness for engraved 3.5" S&Ws.:D

It looks to be a fun gun. Looking forward to learning more as you add it to you collection.:)

Thanks for sharing,

If you want it, and can afford it, there is not much wrong with spending more than the above stated values. When are you gonna see another like it for sale? Especially because it appears that you have been able to handle and inspect it in person. Less risk than purchasing one from the internet or an auction that you can only attend remotely.

Well I was able to pick it up today, cleaned up nice. It did have the initials RS under the cylinder release latch. Here are a few more photos.

Congrats!!! "RJS" = Russell J. Smith, a factory engraver at the time.

If that beauty ever wears out her welcome in your safe, please let me know, and I'll help you work out an "equitable relocation plan.":D

Thanks for sharing the photos. :)

Great looking engraved 27-2! I like the engraving with the nickel finish. The location of the S&W logo is little different too. I have seen one other factory engraved revolver with the logo located under the grips like on yours. On a factory engraved revolver, the logo is usually found on the left side of the frame below the thumb latch. It is also a big plus you found the engravers initials. Along with the original box, you really have a complete package with everything you could ask for. Congratulations on a great find!
