New 17-8

At the last gun show I picked up a S&W model 17-8. It is a 10 shot with an alloy cylinder and full under-lug. Basically looks like a matte finished 617. The serial number starts with CBB and it has a notch almost like a feed ramp on the bottom of the forcing cone. First one I have seen like it, can any one tell me anything about them.

That "flat spot" under the forcing cone was the weakest link in the K frame design. It's normal and definitely not a feed ramp. Joe

I need me a DS10... for sure.

I have read where the 17-8 alloy cylinder has been the problem child of the series. But I have several thousand rounds with her and no issues.
