WELCOME TO THE FORUM, 7X7. THAT IS INDEED A VERY HANDSOME REVOLVER. I WISH THAT THE CLASSIC LINE WAS SPARED THE INTERNAL LOCK. IMHO, THE REVOLVERS WOULD BE MORE IN KEEPING WITH A "CLASSIC" IMAGE. THERE IS NO ARGUING WITH THE PRECISION OF MODERN CNC MACHINES. THEY REDUCE THE NEED FOR LABOR INTENSIVE FITTING OF PARTS. YOUR REVOLVER WAS PURCHASED AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE. Nice gun and a great buy. While I do not doubt the quality of new Smiths at all, how could you possibly have determined that the new 586 has better accuracy than the original model?

I believe he was talking about his new gun compared to his 686.I prefer a non lock gun for looks, but I have a 642 with a lock ( that has never been locked ) and it is a non issue for me. At least on blued guns the lock hides a bit better. Perhaps if the lock on stainless guns was also stainless, it would hide a bit better and not be such an eyesore.

I was setting out to buy a Ruger GP 100 in lieu of not being able to afford a Python, when I spotted a 686 Classic Hunter. Never looked back. Best gun I have ever owned. Yes, I love Pythons, and respect them immensely, but I would not part with my 686 for anything. Best trigger ever, just 'feels' right, and you honestly don't think you can miss when you shoot this gun.

While its not a 586, it is recent production and I thought I`d show how nice it looks. 25-15 ser # dbx76xx I think circa 2010 or so.I am not a big nickel fan, but this one made me change my mind.

Welcome and congrats on the 586. It's a beauty. As I posted earlier this month I'm very happy with my new 686 though I'm fond of the old ones. Can't find a thing I dislike about the new one except the hole. Learning to ignore that. The gun shoots great. Enjoy

They have CNC polishing machines? Incredible!

Plenty of machines have always been used in the production. Methods have changed. If not they'd have gone the way of Colt revolvers.

Rick, when I worked at Smith they did in fact have a CNC polishing "robot". It only did cylinders but did a fine job. One of the big deals in those days was the lack of trained polishers for the carbon steel/blued steel line of handguns. S&W planned on completely phasing out blue steel handguns at one time and allowed their cadre of polishers to retire without training replacements. We are all glad they saw the errors of their ways.

I just picked up a 686 plus and it is one of my favorite revolvers. I love smith and Wesson.
The trigger is great, lock up nice and tight, almost 0 end shake..the quality of my new 686 is the best I've seen or felt..the barrel was even nice and centered..no can't at all..
I will be buying a 586 soon. I felt it would make a nice pair..I sure wish I could find a 4" 586 with a 7 shot cylinder.. Smith and Wesson made 1k 4" , and 1k 6" so I have read..I will keep searching for the elusive 4"..

Wow a New S&W revolver! I didn't know they were making revolvers any more. I ordered a Smith and Wesson M&P R8 over a year ago and still have not received it. They keep on coming out with new models and it seems they can't produce the ones already in their catalog. What a shame.

He said" better in the accuracy dept". That isn't looks. I have the original no dash so I'm fairly clear on about the difference. I'm just wondering how he knows it's better in the accuracy department because I'd wager that they're pretty much the same.

I, too, am new to this forum, but I think I beat you by a month or so. I'm an old timer and I still think in terms of frame size, e.g. J, K, L, N. I realize the "L" isn't a true old time designation; actually it was the newest designation before I dropped out of handgun shooting for 2 decades. Now I'm back! So I have a question regarding that good looking new revolver; what size frame is it?

No 586 Joy, but...

I never saw a new model 586, except in pictures. I tried to get this gun from many different stores in New Mexico, but never found one. I ended up getting a model 66-8 combat magnum, which turned out to be a fantastic gun. This one has the glass beaded finish and is a pleasure to shot. My favorite and prettiest revolver .

Jlduke-I am only comparing my personal 686 to this new 586.The variation in group size is not night and day but the 686 tends to throw 2 out of ten shots a hair right at the end of the string.The 586 does not do this as of yet.I love long barreled revolvers and have 4 total.Colt Saa 7.5 inch .45 ,Colt python 6inch,S&W 686 no lock and now 586 classic with the lock.I would not trade any of them and love the hell out of them all.But this new 586 has the fit ,finish and function of the greatest revolvers ever produced.sorry if that rubs some of you the wrong way but you need to get out of the mindset that only prelock smiths are worth buying.its just not true!

Here is an review from shooting times.The author states that during the accuracy tests when shooting 2 full cylinders (12 shot groups) he found that the new 586 did not have variation POI from position 1 -6 in the cylinder and noticed a level of consistency in the new 586 that he had not experienced in his older model.maybe that is what i am experiencing in my 686 compared to the new model.Rising Phoenix: Smith & Wesson Model 586 Review - Shooting Times

You misunderstand, it didn't rub me the wrong way at all.
I was just looking for some clarification. I love L frames and you sure got a sweet one there.
