I purchased a couple new 586 L-comps and both have extractor ratchets that are extremely rough looking and peened. I called the performance center and was told it's a product of hand cutting the teeth and was normal. Struck me as odd since none of my older Smiths have any peening even after hundreds of rounds. Any thoughts on wether this is BS or should it be replaced?

A rough appearance on the top of the ratchet near it's edge, (and occasional burrs) can result when precuts are made prior to final fitting/filing.
The extractor/cylinder assy bears against the breechface on the boss that surrounds the center pin in your photo. This boss is above the ratchets approx .010"-.012" , so the imperfections you are seeing do not, or should not, touch the breechface or interfere with the operation/rotation of the cylinder.

As long as the gun carrys up properly, the DA is smooth and consistent on each chamber, and there is no evidence of rubbing or contact on the breechface that you can attribute to these burrs, then the artifacts on the ratchets are inconsequential.

Thank you. That puts the mind at ease. I didn't know if the hand would contact this and cause undue parts wear. Everything locks up well seems timed correctly. I much appreciate the information.
