The true square trigger guards are at least 15 years old. The new guard is kinda flat and knurled on the front but does not hook out to the front like the old style. If S&W told you you have a two year old gun it's the newer rounded trigger guard.

I believe the old square trigger guards are found on 3rd Gens from the '89-90 period, maybe as late as 91, but I don't think so. FWIW

Cherokee....hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine...I love shooting mine....

What is the three letter prefix of the serial number? That will narrow it down.

I think you will find that your 5906 was made between 89 and 91. I have one too with the square trigger guard. Also a 6906 with same. Do you live on the Dale Hollow Lake in TN?

My wife gave me a 5906 with the square trigger guard for Christmas. It was LNIB and was never fired before I got it. Way cool.

Hello,

Other folks have helped with date of manufacture, so I'll just congratulate you on your purchase of what is in my opinion the best 9mm pistol ever made-and yes, I rank it above a Sig or Glock-tough competition for sure!

Buy a new recoil spring and some new mags and enjoy your new Smith.

FWIW, I have personally seen a 5906 go 4,000 rounds without a single malfunction...of...any...kind.

Roughly 3,000 of those rounds were shot by a new shooter, about a thousand by me-couldn't let her have ALL the fun, am I right?

Her 5906 absolutely sold me on S&W autos. It out-Glocked a Glock in terms of reliablity, which is no small feat.

The 5906 is an absolute champ. Great choice!

Best,

Heekma

thanks to everyone for the help should have known S&W could make mistakes to I have learned a lot from all of you look forward to learning a lot more

Hopefully still on the 5906 birthdate subject:
Just picked up three 5906's with VCU, VCR & VYW s/n's. :D
Could anyone venture a guess as to their D/O/B's?
Love this forum! Populated by a lot of great "Smithguys."
Thanks in advance,
Newvik :)

I would also like to get some info on a # TCP6731. Square frame.
