New 617

Greetings,
I have a new 617 10 shot and am having two odd issues. After pulling back the hammer in single action there is a faint click a second later, the next issue is that it shoots 2” high at 30’ with the elevation screw all the way down. I have no idea about the click and am curious if I need to find a lower rear sight blade.

I you are having problems send it back to S&W for repairs.

Were you shooting off of a solid sand bag rest? Shooting offhand with a new gun could cause you to "heel" the gun and easily shoot high. It is also possible there is an incorrect blade in the rear sight. I'm at a loss about that second click.

I have a 617. When you pull the hammer back, there are three clicks - first the cylinder lock, then the pawl, then the sear. All are normal. You may be hearing the pawl slipping back down once cocked.

On mine the hammer also clicked in double action when passing the lock mechanism on the left side of the hammer. I removed the lock and filled the hole with a Lock Delete, and no more click there.

Shooting high at 10 yards? what about on down range- 25 yards? 50 yards?

I bought a S&W 69 right after they came out. Like many of the early guns with the elevation all the way down it shot point of aim with light bullets but was sighted in for about 300 yards with the heavy ones.

I tried to talk S&W into sending me a new sight assembly but they insisted I send the whole gun back at their expense. It took a couple of weeks to get the gun back but it had a new rear sight assembly with a shorter blade installed and the original sight assembly was also returned. They switched to shipping the guns with the shorter blade as standard equipment.

I bet S&W will do the same if you want them to fix it. Replacing just the blade requires twisting a screw until it breaks so if you go the DIY route make sure you have everything you need.

I traded a used Glock 48 for a brand new 617 with a 4 inch barrel last summer. Mine shoots to point of aim with most ammo I have tried and seems to be particularly accurate with CCI standard velocity. I hope yours ends up shooting as well as mine does.

Thank you for your assistance. The sight blade may be the way to go for that fix. As far as the click goes it is very faint , not loud like as a sear and a full second after after the sear engagement.
I do not ever remember shooting or owning a Smith with a lock and much of my experience is with other makes of revolvers or pistols. Thank you all.

I may call S&W on Monday.
