Looking at the current line of 629's, brought up a question. Is the only difference between the deluxe and classic versions the grip material, with the deluxe having wood and the classic coming with rubber hogues?

You would be correct on your question. For me I would buy the classic and shop for a nice set of wooden grips from Culina, altamont, eagle, or some other custom grip maker. I personally like the look of the Hogue G10’s with the stainless steel frame…they look really good

I've grown fond of the VZ round-to-square conversion G10 grips on stainless. Fit my hand just perfect, not too flashy, but everyone's different. Here's a set on my 625 for those curious (they come in other colors and checkered or smooth, FYI).

That's the whole reason for wanting a new(er), 629. I currently have a 629, unfluted classic hunter that I'd like to get some new grips for. The factory Pach's are curling where the split comes together, right behind the trigger guard and it pokes my finger after every shot. I have a set of "X" frame grips on another revolver that I really like.

If you are a shooter, look for grips made by LOK. These actually have a profile like the original 29 grips with a palm swell They make wonderful grips for a 1911 aw well...
They do not look as beautiful as beautiful wood, but are functional in that your hand is literally "locked".....
For show, Keith Brown makes the most beautiful stocks today, but nice grips can be found everywhere....Hogue has a great selection...

I'm wanting a set that covers the back strap for felt recoil reduction. I haven't found much for square butt models. I like the Pachmayr's, but after some shooting, they seem to start splitting at the front seam and keep pinching/poking my fingers when the gun is fired.

Unfortunately, I've found that you pay for what you get when it comes to grips. I have not found a cheap solution. I haven't used the X frame grips, so I'm not fully up to speed. However, when it comes to contour, the old wood grips and Culina's work very well for me. The Hogues are just too skinny, and Altamont is a joke...in my opinion. Even the Culina magnas are LEAGUES beyond the altamonts for fill the hand. I don't have huge hands for the record....
