So when I go to open the cylinder and push in the cylinder release(forget the name for this part) I notice that the internal lock flag pops up a bit such that I can see the 'locked' word slightly.

Is that normal? What parts of the cylinder open mechanism rubs on the internal lock flag?

The lock does not engage and the flag goes back down when I take pressure of the cylinder release.

Ok. the bolt mechanism is located under the flag.....so it must be pushing up a bit on the flag when it is pushed forward.

No, it shouldn't do that.

If you cock the hammer back & look into the frame you can see the bolt's arm goes right under the internal lock's mechanism. I suspect it's components are not mated together properly. I had one that needed repositioning to get them to lay flat together.

I see the bolt arm under the IL mechanism. After looking more at it, the flag is pushing up slightly not simply when the cylinder release is pushed forward but when the cylinder release is pushed in toward the frame. Since its hard to push it forward without also pushing it into the frame this happens. I can't see exactly what is contacting what though without taking it apart. Hard to believe that I've got the only one that does this though.
Otherwise this 637 seems very nice...

Well....after a call with s&w the cs rep didn't think above was normal either.

Man what a pain in the rump.

Sure
I'm not making this up. I have no bone to pick with s&w I'm just a guy making an observation and asking a question. No bashing no freaking out on my part.

Update: I checked a few other new j frames today at the shop . I was able to reproduce above to various degrees on other j frames. So I'm calling this 'normal behavior' based on my direct observations. It is simply the bolt movement that is pushing the flag.

And in addition to all this I also notice that when the cylinder closes and snaps in place the 'lock flag' actually jumps up very quickly and then drops to its normal position. This must be the bolt jarring the flag when the bolt is moving reward on cylinder closing...
Not sure if that is usual either? You really have to watch for it since the flag pops up and down very quickly.
