New 63's?

I handled one of the 5" 63's last weekend and am trying to convince myself to go back tomorrow and buy it. I really liked the way it felt and that extra bit of site radius is nice as well. Something about the longer tubed J's that is hard to resist. Go for it! The worst that can happen is that you hate it then have to offer it up to one of us on the forum

As long as you understand that it won't really be effective against anything larger than a rabbit, I think it's a fine choice. As much as I enjoy shooting my 6 inch 617, it is a bit heavy for long distance carry as a sidearm, which is why I'm looking into a chest or shoulder holster for it.
BTW, if your thinking of using shotshells as a defense for rattlesnakes, think again. Shotshells don't pattern well from a rifled barrel and with a 22 caliber shotshell you'll have to be well within the striking range for it to be effective against a rattlesnake. A much better choice would be to make enough noise to cause them to avoid you or become very accurate with standard 22LR.
BTW, if you do find one make sure to post back. My impression is that the 617 is the 22 that is produced in the largest volume and the other 22's are basically afterthoughts, so it might be a bit hard to find. Now, that I've become a bit hooked on shooting 22's, I find the model 63 a very interesting little gun. I'll bet they are a joy for DA practice and suspect that they may prove to be just as accurate as the 617.

If this is your first 22 revolver might I suggest getting a model 17, 617, or 18 in a 4" barrel. I think you will find them to be a little more gun for the money. I also believe they will hold their value better. Here is a picture of my model 18 with a 4" barrel. My model 17 has a 6" barrel. I am a big fan of 22 handguns. Don

Exactly what he said..and K frames have a better trigger.
I *love* my 5" Model 63. I think it's ideal for what you want it for.
It seems any discussion of these spawns a bevy of recommendations for K frames. There's not a thing wrong with them, but for me having to carry a much larger much heavier revolver just to get a better double action trigger (on a gun I'm going to shoot single action 95% if the time) just isn't worth it. (As an aside, my carry revolver is also a J frame, so it makes sense for me to have the same lockwork on both.)

I've got my heart set on one of the new ones with the 5" barrel. I liked the 4" sb that I had, but I just like the rb and the 5" barrel better.
