Hello,

Just got a new 642-2 yesterday. I was not in the market for anything, went to the gunshop for ammo and for no particular reason asked to handle it and that was that. My ultra light carry gun has been a Keltec 32 until now. I haven't compared the actual weights but as for perceived weight, it seems every bit as light as the Keltec.

I've always preferred revolvers over autos though I have carried many types of both over the years. My previous snubby is an old Colt Detective Special which now, in comparison to the 642, feels like it weighs a ton.

Maybe its just that new gun high, or just the light weight, but this particular piece is very attractive to me. My trip to the range was eye opening.

I knew it would kick hard at such light weight but the first shot opened an immediate blister on the web of my thumb. I held an even tighter grip after that and found it very controllable. Most surprising was its accuracy. My 60 year old eyes have sent me to optics this year for the first time with handguns yet even with the small fixed sights I was able to get a good, round, centered group of 4" at 10 yards for the seven shots following the first shot. I was really just checking for function and familiarization and not trying hard for accuracy so I am happy with that.

I have some questions. I read the first 44 pages of this subforum and did not find answers there, though a more thorough search might turn up some.

First, what does the "-2" signify in the 642-2 model number? Is it just a time frame in the production runs?

Second, I would appreciate recommendations for a reasonable quality ankle holster and pocket holster. By reasonable I mean less $ than Rosen, Allesi, etc. but more than Uncle Mike's. Something like Galco level.

Third, I see references to problems with the internal lock, which mine has. I have had many guns with them, I don't like it, but I never even tried to mess with one, just left them alone, and never had a problem. I have seen references to a previous long running post on the issue but I can't find that post. Does anyone remember how I can find that post?

Thank you for any info.

I believe that the dash-2 represents the 642 with the IL feature. Not going into that. It's been beaten to death. I'd take it out.

For a pocket holster you can't beat one by Robert Mica. You might wait a few months for it but it's worth the wait. Wait 'til you see his prices. The guy should be getting a bit more. Here's a link: http://www.frontiernet.net/~akim/index.html

Accuracy is pretty good with these little guns. I use the Crimson Trace grips and get under 2" groups at 30' and 1 1/8" at 21'.
Here's a pic of my 21' group.

Thanks Yanici, I will check out that holster. That is a great group you shot. Don't think I can do that well off a rest.

I sometimes hear people say, well, it's a pocket pistol, no one can shoot those things accurately anyway, so who cares how accurate the gun itself is. From my point of view, the inherent difficulty of shooting a short-barreled revolver makes the inherent accuracy of that gun even more important. I LIKE this group. I like knowing that the small-barreled J-frames are, in generally, tight and accurate. That tells me that the only variable left... is me.

It's a fine gun!

No need to mess with the lock. Unless you're going to be using hit reloads, you'll have no issues. I only have one IL, and I don't mind it one bit. I've gone through countless rounds of .38 spl in my 642-2, and over 1200 +P rounds in the past year and have had no issues.

Most people who don't like the IL don't like it because they feel S&W caved in and went to the darkside when they added ILs. The stories of failure are likestories of kabooms in Glocks. You'll hear all sorts of stories, but in reality.. there aren't many failures going on at all.

As far as the kick you were talking about.... I find (for me) Winchester .38 spl 130gr FMJ is great for practice. Obviously if you are using it for carry, and want to carry +P you need to practice with that also, but for more enjoyable shooting... I go with the 130 gr FMJ.

I have owned my 642-2 with factory-installed CT grips for 3 years...no problems.

Recoil is pretty snappy. When I go to the range I use a weightlifting glove on my shooting hand for padding. Available at Wal-Mart for about $12 these gloves have enough palm and finger padding. The gloves go down half way on the fingers allowing good trigger control. When firing grip tightly high on the grip.

I have shot full house 357's out of my Chiefs Special and the IL never engaged. I would recommend Speer 38+P 135grain Short Barrel hollow points. As for a pocket holster, I like my Galco pocket protector made from cowhide. I also have a horsehide pocket holster from Galco arriving anytime now. Galco says the horsehide is more durable and hides the gun better than the cowhide. I'll have to see. Worst case I stick with the cowhide holster which I really like. By the way, my current cowhide version hides the gun just fine.

When I shoot my 642 I use one trick to save the web of my shooting hand. I carry a roll of masking tape in my shooting bag to hang my targets (usually paper plates) from the metal target frames at my club's indoor range. I wrap some tape around the thumb of my shooting hand close to the web of my hand and this helps prevent skin breaking and makes the shooting experience more pleasurable.

I agree with the Mica recommendation. Nice holster at a great price and it's never come out with the gun when drawn.

You might look into the no holster option...the Barami hip grip. Very secure old-time solution and very easy to conceal.

Thanks much for all the great input guys. I am eager to get back to the range with some lighter recoil ammo but at the moment .38 special seems hard to find.

I too carry a 642 with crimson trace. Great little gun. I also shoot 130 gr bullets
