Picked up a new 642 which does not have that stupid lock:D and have a couple questions. Gun appears to be well made and my "counter tests" showed the lock up/ timing was positive and the cylinder/barrel gap was fine. Trigger pull is a bit high but if necessary after a lot of firing if still not happy I know how to go inside and fix.

Question 1 What is the difference between 642 and my 642-1 The fired brass that came with the package in the NYS mandated envelope was dated 2-5-2013.

Question 2 On the yoke/crane when the action is open there is the number 510 which is in bigger script that other lettering on this piece. Any idea what that is, an assembly number perhaps. The serial number is on both the bottom of the grip area between the rubber grips and on the inside of the frame under the barrel. Than number 510 is not any part of the guns serial number

mine has the number 952 on the crane. It is a 642-2

.
Interesting! (Thank you) As stated I just got this little gem Saturday* and I assumed that do to the date(2-5-13) on the fired brass envelope it was a very recent production. Why would my new gun be a 1 and yours was a 2 unless it hung up somewhere, or did the change numbers just happen in the last few weeks

* I actually bought the gun in the last week of March, but do to the way NY laws works :mad:it took this long to get my purchase amendment signed by the judge so I could take it out of the LGS..

my -2 was purchased at a very high volume store around 2006, i think.

i can look it up if you need the purchase date. mine does have the lock.

maybe they went back to the -1 numbering when they returned to the no-lock production.

Hi NYlakesider: My 642-1 (CRMxxxx) has no lock. My 642-2 (CPLxxxx) has the lock. My LGS says they are 2 different SKUs. The lock-CPL was purchased first. So far, we haven't informed you about that 3-digit number on the crane. Best I can do.

I saw that same thing.

It also seemed to me that the -1's were the no locks , even if they were later or new recent production.

It seemed the -2's are the lock style.

Thank you and all other responders. I find it strange that on this great forum no one has the answer (YET) to the number in the crane. It could be any of many different things, probably not important but I'm curious.:D

I also have a 642-2 ser#CJVxxxx and the code on yoke is 324.
My bet is you can find the same number (324) on each major component in the gun......
