It's finally here! I picked it up today, and immediately ran a box of Gold Dots through it. What a beautiful gun. Fits my hand beautifully, and is a pleasure to shoot. One of my favorite attributes are the fish scale scalloping on the frame.

I have had my 945 for a little over a year now and still enjoy shooting it as much as I did the first time. Congrats on your purchase!

Who makes a 5" match barrel for 945-1?

The barrel that came on my pistol is pretty rough on the inside and not as tightly fitted as I would like. The 945 loses in accuracy to my Les Baer. I would like to fit a better barrel.

Otherwise the 945 is a very nice pistol, it has character and is smooth to use.

My 945-1 has been superbly accurate and reliable. I used it for shooting the 45 stage in bullseye pistol matches where the only limiting factor was the shooter. Off a bench my 5" 945 will shoot one hole groups with 185 gr. Star LSWCHP at ca 790 fps or ca 710 fps.

I believe my 945-1 could do the same if it had a new barrel fitted tighter than the original. The original barrel is also quite rough on the inside.

I just shot several factory and handloads through my 945-1 and my Les Baer 1911 Premier II for a magazine article. From sandbags at 25 yards the 945-1 could do on average 2.3"-2.4" groups with the best two loads. The Les Baer did 1.3"-1.5" average groups with the same loads.

The 945-1 is a very nice gun but I was disappointed with the accuracy a $2300 gun can achieve. Now I have a nagging need to replace the barrel.

A very proficient gunsmith and competition shooter friend of mine looked at my 945-1 and noticed a few problems with the barrel:
- the inside of the barrel is quite rough, both the chamber and the lands of the rifling;
- the barrel has 0.002" of front-to-back movement;
- the rear of the barrel locks up to a different position side-to-side each time; he confirmed this phenomenon both by measuring the position of the barrel and by shooting the gun for groups - he got horizontal flyers.

I believe the construction of the gun allows for great accuracy, but the barrel must be well made and properly fitted. My gun unfortunately does not meet those criteria, at least not for $2300 worth.

It is such a nice gun that I will eventually make it accurate instead of selling it on. If I were not overseas I would already be negotiating with Smith & Wesson for a barrel replacement.

I would contact S&W and explain your problem. I don't know what the factory specs are for the short barrled version but you may be able to have the problem corrected by S&W.

I would think that with a $2300 gun from the PC, that issues such as you describe would not be the subject of negotation. The only thing to discuss is how fast they are going to have it back to you after they have corrected all such issues entirely at S&W's expense.

Well, I have had zero issues with mine. Of course I've only put about 200 rounds through it, but it is everything I could have hoped for and more. Just an excellent gun.

My barrel and busing on my 945 are extemely tight. Also the barrel is as smooth as a babys behind. I would get in touch with Smith and see if they will take care of your problem

I will contact S&W.

Even if they decide to take it in, I will have to apply for an export permit to send the gun to Belgium to their repair center. And then apply for an import permit to get the gun back. Oh how I enjoy the paperwork.

I just had a Model 29 revolver with a manufacturing fault. I called Smith & Wesson, they said send the gun to your local distributor. I did as instructed. The local distributor called me and said they will not touch the gun but they can send it to Belgium if I pay for the permits and shipping. The revolver, just as my 945, was not imported buy this distributor so they will not honor the S&W warranty.

I will try to send the 945 to Belgium on my own, if S&W agrees to take the gun in.

My short 945 is a joy. It has turned into my carry gun, a target grade carry gun that is 100% reliable. It REALLY doesn't get better.

945

This is my favorite in the SW semi auto pistols. Mine was bought before
SW started making 1911 pistols.

My favorite 45 is the Ed Brown Executive Elite.
