I was surprised to discover three flaws from the factory on my new 9mm full size. Two are minor, one is annoying.
1. The larger backstraps didn't fit flush to the beavertail, causing an uncomfortable slice feel in my grip.
2. The slide release didn't fully catch. It was incorrectly bent to sit almost completely outboard of the slide pocket and catching only on a small portion of the edge.
3. The trigger safety doesn't fully retract when taking up slack. It works, but adds a detent to the trigger pull.

I fixed the backstraps and slide release by bending them. I'm still thinking about the trigger safety. It clears correctly when I push on the bottom of the trigger so I was thinking about minor filing on the catch. But then I noticed that the trigger cutout seems to have an arch in the part that contacts the catch. So that may be the proper thing to clearance. Any ideas or suggestions? Have you seen these problems?

Can you post some pics of what you're talking about with the trigger safety? I must be especially dense today :)

I doubt I could get a good shot. The split trigger serves as a kind of trigger safety preventing the gun from firing during a nasty drop (or something like this. When nothing is pressing the trigger, a small triangle on the trigger back contacts the frame to lock it. When you squeeze the trigger, the bottom half moves back and raises the triangle so it is able to fit within the frame cutout so you can fire the gun. Mine doesn't retract fully when I press the trigger adding a step to the takeup.

Thanks for asking.

If it was mine I think I'd send it in and let S&W fix it. I don't like the idea of filing on a new pistol. Of course, that's me. If you're comfortable with it, it sounds like minor filing on the opening rather than the trigger back itself would be in order. That's from your description of the arch in the opening which my M&Ps definitely do not have.

Still, if it were me I'd let the factory handle the job.

Thanks for your judicious advice and confirmation of trigger cutout modification idea. I was just looking for someone who might help me suss it out.

You're right. I'm perfectly comfortable with this task.
