New 9mm Shield plagued with issues

Not being a gun mechanic and leaning mostly toward revolvers, I would humbly suggest that you field strip the gun again taking it no further than you did the first time and see if it IS possible that something (like a spring) went in backwards. Sometimes springs are larger at one end than the other and it might make a difference. Again, I am not a gun mechanic, just trying to offer a possible answer before you have to pack it up and send it back.

Even if they fix the problem, you could be without your gun for some time. :D

I also seem to remember something about rough feed ramps that were an issue until they were smoothed. You may also wish to look at that very carefully. Good luck....

It kinda looks like the slide is either short stroking and not letting the brass get kicked out before attempting to go back into battery. I'd just field strip it to clean off anything, make sure it has just enough oil on the rails, and double check everything is where it should be when reassembling. Try test firing it again, and then see if S&W will look over it. It might take some time since their CS department is understaffed and overworked, though I was assured that they're hiring more people to handle the increased workload they've had in the past few months.

This is definitely NOT a cleaning or lube issue. Maybe the recoil spring was installed backwards, but I doubt it.

You, sir, most likely have, a LEMON. If the recoil spring is in correct and you were using factory ammo this should not happen PERIOD

The Shield can run dry just fine. It really sounds like it needs to go back to S&W, and rest assured, they will take care of you. The shield is a fine firearm and very reliable (typically speaking of course). It sounds like this particular pistol was assembled incorrectly or with out-of-spec parts.

Good luck, and let us know what happens with the pistol. Oh, and like someone else said, heat is not an issue. These guns simply work, and you should expect it to work under most any condition.

my sentiments on the issue exactly. personally, i'm a glock guy so i'm used to my handguns running....period. like i said before, i know when running correctly they are great guns, so i'm willing to give it another chance after inspection and service. i really want to love this gun.

just got an email back from s&w, and they have recommended i sent it to them for inspection. i am awaiting the prepaid pre insured shipping label.

what is the recommended carrier to ship a firearm with?

I have a Shield in 9mm,as of yet I have not had a problem with it.I have shot around 1,000 rounds thru it and all types of ammo.I love mine, thinking of getting a full size m&p in .40 soon..

Whatever the name on the label is. ;) (don't take a UPS label to Fedex, they probably wouldn't be amused)

Was gonna say the same... OP its rare and in no way indicative of the shield in general. Its easily one of the best conceal pistols currently around. Send it back and get it fixed!!

You'll likely get a FedEx shipping label. Box it up and you can either have it picked up by FedEx or dropped off at a shipping station. S&W should receive it 2-3 days later and from there it's a waiting game. Currently they seem to have a huge backlog of firearms being inspected and serviced due to a huge influx of new customers, so it could be anywhere between 4-8 weeks. If it seems like it's moving slowly, then give them a call and see what's up.

When I sent in my M&P40 they requested the mags go with it. Double check with them just to be sure, but they'll likely want you to send any mags you have with it so they can test everything out.
