I've had this guy for three weeks now. His name is Pogi which means "Handsome" in Tagalog. The kennel in TX where he was abandoned ID'd him as Great Pyrenees. Pawngal and I see Lab in him. The vet said GP but I think she was just repeating the original ID. The trainer says she see Akita in the face but not the body.

At one year old he is an old soul dog. When the rude curs next door bark like mad at him he just looks. Once they go inside he goes and pees on their fence! He never barks. He has very little use for other dogs but gets along with them for awhile and then he walks off on his own. He only occasionally has an interest in toys but when he does he playfully kills them by rolling on his back on top of them.

He is a looker and a charmer. I took him to a German Heritage festival last weekend. We could barely walk with all the people that wanted to pet him. He loves the attention. I think he used to have a boy of his own because he loves kids. There is a neighbor boy that he loves to just sit and watch him play ball.

He looks like GP to me. Usually they are very protective around strangers and other dogs though. A friend has one and after two years that dog still acts like she would eat me for lunch if she is in her pen. I even gave her dog biscuits and couldn't win her over. That dog hates about everyone but its owner.
It sounds like you got a very well tempered dog.

Don't matter really what breed. Looks GREAT. Kinda reminds me of Mark Twain' "A Dogs Tale" --Great story. Starts out something like "My mother was a Collie and my father was a Saint Bernard, but I am a Presbyterian" Good read! Just realize that Sam Clements was very liberal, and a superb wordsmith.
here's a link; A Dog's Tale (by Mark Twain)

A few years ago we were in Moab, UT. Every spring there is a big off road expo. At one of the booths there was a girl with a GP. I asked her about him and she told a story. She got the dog for protection because she lived alone. One night she was sitting alone and the dog growled. That was new and she hadn't heard anything like it before. Then the dog launched into the dining room and there was a series of yells/screams of pain. By the time she got there, the screamer was gone.

So she called the locals who came right away. They searched outside and then came in. The first guy called his dispatch and had them alert the local ERs. So she asked how he knew the guy would be going to the ER, and the cop showed her a chunk of flesh, apparently removed from the rear of the bad guy. And sure enough, while they were still taking the report the guy appeared and was arrested. Those big dogs just don't mess around. Big powerful jaws and teeth to go along with them.

The girl said she never got answers. One of her questions was how the guy healed up. He was clearly missing a chunk of butt muscle and skin. The guy was convicted but got a light sentence, he got pain instead.

GPs were bred to resemble sheep and for their aggression. They stayed with the sheep all the time and at 160+ lbs they would easily kill predatory wolves.

This lady did the right thing having one for protection.

looks like a yellow lab mix to me. Knew folks with sheep who had GP's... they only allowed the owners around the flocks they guarded. Either way, if it's part lab or part GP, you'll have a dog with decent protective instincts, level temperament & good intelligence, if you'll do your part & train it, work with it every day.
