Saw this at the LGS a week or so ago, and thought it looked and checked out pretty good. I thought I'd give it a try, so I put it on layway and picked it up over the weekend.

Taurus 431, five shot, fixed sight, 44 Special, with a 3" barrel and a smooth "combat" trigger. Made it 1994, it appears to have been fired very little, and carried less. There is a small spot of worn blue at the muzzle on the left size, and a faint turn line. About the size of a K-frame so it fits in all my K-frame holsters.

I put 50 rounds of Magtech, 200 gr, "Cowboy" loads through it today. Very nice shooter.

Very nice gun. I had the stainless model 431. Well made and good shooter. Icing on the cake was the fixed sights. I just could not get by the target stocks. For the life of me I don't know why they came from the Factory wearing target stocks. A Forum member here occasionally posts a pic of his wearing magnas. I ended up selling mine to a guy at work. He has never shot it and wants to sell it back. If I could find a set of magnas for it, I'd buy it back in a second. Nice find. The 696 should have been the same fixed sight configuration.

KLYDE, could you get it round butted? (Is that even a word. :D)

My apologies for thread drift but the short answer is no. The Taurus grip frame has far less material as compared to a Smith. Not enough to cut without ruining the frame. I inquired at a couple of the major shops and nobody will work on them. Too bad as they are a very solid gun. Extremely well made with quality on par with some of my brand name guns. Maybe this was a good time for Taurus. I even had the box and paperwork with mine. I'd pay a premium for a set of magnas.

I bought the gun used, it had the taurus rubber stocks on it. The thing is, years ago I had a Taurus 66 (very good revolver) which came with the magna styled wood on it and I had swapped for pachs, so I put those on the 431 and ditched the rubber stocks.
I still kinda want a Tyler for it.

I have a pair of Rossi 720 .44s that are also five shot, K frame size revolvers with three inch barrels. The 720 is stainless with a full underlug. I have the "covert" models that have spurless hammers, fixed sights and DAO triggers. The actions are as smooth as any stock S&W. The OEM oversize rubber stocks are a little bulky but make it comfortable to shoot...Like your Taurus, it makes a nice carry piece that throws five fat and heavy bullets that penetrate well without heavy recoil and muzzle blast...I don't think many people understand the beauty of this type...I have encountered a good many people who don't get it. If I came across one like yours, I would be very interested. I like your modern "Bulldog" revolver.

Agree, mine has a trigger just like you describe. The only complaint I have is the front sight is too wide and so far I haven't found a load it shoots especially well....but that's only been a few.

Taurus 431s can be round butted

I have 2 431s, one blue and one stainless, both are 3" barrel and were square butts. Apparently Taurus made them with 2.5" barrels that were round butts.
I was window shopping CDNN's web site one day and they have Pachmayr round butt grips. I ordered 2 sets and used them to reverse engineer round butts on both.
Sorry I don't have photos, but I'm sicky poo right now.
Give me a day or so and I'll post pictures.
