I just received these vintage sambar stag grips from forum member Cocked & Locked. By the way, he was really great to deal with and shipped super fast!

I LOVE Indian sambar stag as it's the most beautiful of all stags and also has less pith in the center of the horns which makes it so heavy, thick and so desirable. You can't even compare sambar stag with elk or whatever other stag horn as it's so superior.

These are really vintage as the color of the white of the antler have yellowed and that's a clue to it's age, (i.e. old!).

I bought these grips for this 617 that I purchased new in 1990 and it has hundreds if not thousands of rounds through it and is still as tight as new. In those days the 617 was a six shot and had a square butt. They also came with Goncalo Alves combat grips which I really like but these, (IMHO), turn it into a completely different looking gun.

I have small hands and even the though Goncalo Alves combat grips are great, these fit my hand even better!

Okay, enough blabbering. These are terrible pics as I only have a 6 year old digital camera but at least the grips, (or stocks), show up nice. That "crack" on the left grip is barely surface deep and to me only adds more character to these old beauties. What do you all think of my new grips?

Oh yeah and PLEASE no comments on the Tyler Trigger Shoe! I personally love 'em and and only use them for target or squirrel shooting. They are easily removed with no damage to the trigger as the screws are made of soft aluminum and any marks are easily removed with Flitz polish.

Beautiful grips. I am not very knowledgeable about stag, either sambar, Elk or whatever. But I know what looks good to me, and those are grips that I would be proud to have on any revolver, blued or stainless. I can understand your being pleased at having a set of grips that fit your gun and your hand. I hope you enjoy many years of using both the grips and the revolver. Sincerely. brucev.

Welcome to the "New Gun - Old Grips" society!
Your grips "personalize" your gun and offer a blend of old with new.
Modern guns with vintage grips....what could possibly be better than that?

The classic grips make the gun! I have Sambar's on my .45 Colt Mountain gun and wish I could find and afford a set to put on my 6 shot 617.

By the way, with the addition of these stags to my 617, I now have a set of sambar stags on each of my two favorite .22 revolvers.

Now if I could just find a set of sambar stag boot grips for my 442-2, I would be in stag heaven!

Man, looking GOOD also C&L! Same with yours G.B. and thanks for sharing.

Any more sambar stag out there?

I find these Spresser Stags perfect on the j-frame....a little thicker than the stock wood, non-slip, and they don't catch on clothing like rubber...and of course, they look cool..

In past have seen ad for someone offering to "colorize" stag. Can anyone give me contact for this service. Have a set of grips I would like to have done. Agree that any handgun is made better looking by stag grips.

Hi Lee,
You might want to go over to bladeforums.com and ask there. Knifemakers color or dye stag all the time.
