Picked up a new classic model 29, blue with 4 inch barrel. Thought the cylinder was just smudged from handling in the shop. Got it home and gave it a cleaning/oil, as I do on all new guns. Noticed that the blueing is splotchy and uneven, mostly the cylinder. The recoil shield was only half blued. It was covered up from the test firing I guess.
Barrel crown is almost jagged. Action was very good. Heavy but smooth and crisp.
Used about 50 rounds of reloads, 7.0 unique and a 240 gr cast swc. Grouped pretty well, so maybe the crown isn't mucking it up too much.
I'm sure if I shout they will reblue it or just the cylinder??
I'll keep it as I plan to shoot the heck out of it, but wish there was more attention to detail/QC for an almost 800. revolver.

It is inexcusable that S&W would sell a product that badly made and finished! When one pays that much for anything it should be much better than that. Even if it is just a "shooter" I would certainly return it to S&W and want it put in proper order...

Doesn't S&W only fire every other chamber? Seems odd that you'd get a gun dirty enough to hide major bluing loss from three rounds.

Are you positive you got a new gun?

Well, on my part, there is no question that I should have looked much closer at this gun. It is a new in the box specimen, which I registered today for the warranty.

Perhaps Smith was so out of practice with blue steel guns, that they didn't get it right.

I would have returned it to the gunshop. Now you have to pay money to ship it for repair.

Well, I'm about 50 minutes from Springfield, and have dropped guns off for repair before. They do have to ship them back to you.

I had seen a 24-3 with 4 inch barrel in great condition, and THAT blue was beautiful, but I knew I would be handloading for her, so went with the new "classic".

S&W will pay shipping both ways. Call them for a return authorization, they will send you a pre-paid shipping label.

That's sad to hear. I bought a new 29 Classic a few months ago and it is flawless, like a piece of fine jewelry! Nice and tight too. It's so nice, I can't bring myself to shoot it. It's better than many Performance Center gun I've had.

Are you certain you bought it from a reputable source?

Ditto! After reading this post, I went back over the Model 29 Classic that I just purchased for a much closer look.

I couldn't find any flaws anywhere!

Send it back. If they get enough back maybe(I doubt it) they will improve quality control.

I just got mine back last week. They reblued it and only had it 3-4 days. The gun shoots really well and the bluing is now perfect!

I have a 5" blued Classic I bought used. Tightest cylnder lock-up of any of my Smiths, but they are all pretty good. My Classic shoots the best and most accurately of 4 29's I shoot.
The other guys are right; send it back promptly.

Called SW today. She was very nice and said she would send a pick-up tag right out, or i could bring it up myself, HOWEVER, she said that due to the time of tghe year, it could take up to 4-5 weeks.
Not real happy about that.
