new Colt Cobra

I picked up a 1961 cobra to CCW Ive been looking for one with some wear. I shot it yesterday and it shoots great. the grips number to the gun so I will get another set to carry it

Nice gun. I have an old Colt Cobra that might date before yours; I have no real idea. I hated the grips so I switched them but I still have the originals. I'll have to check those SNs!

First time I shot it with standard 38 Spl ammo, IT BIT ME!

Have the original grips but it wears Good Years for shooting now....

Congrats on a great find. My Cobra dates to '68 and was purchased new as my first off-duty gun for $85. The only modification was a bobbed hammer for some undercover work I was doing way back when. I lef the original grips on but added a grip adapter for better control.

My EDC gun is the plain Jane version to your more finely finished Cobra, a parkerized Colt Agent with the bobbed hammer and Pachy presentation grips. It carries nicely, conceals easily & with the rubber grips is a pleasure to shoot...I back it up with a S&W Chiefs as a Kansas City reload...hope you like your Cobra as much as I do our old Agent.

I have a '58 that has a good bit of finish wear, but still a pretty tight gun. Two years back, I found a pristine '62 model, and reasoned that I already had a "carry-able" one, so why not a safe queen?

Not sure I'll shoot that one. The worn one is a great carry piece, but I'm not a fan of the Colt trigger (some say the opposite), so I pay the 1-rd fee and stick with my j-frame.

I also have one of each with the barrel shroud. I suppose that the later ones are a stronger design, but I grew up with the mental picture of the exposed ejector rod, sticking out there in the open, and I really like it better. These will fit in the same Galco pocket horsehide holster that I carry my J frames in, even though they are a little larger.

Don't ever hit anyone over the head with it - I know guy (Cop) who shot someone with his and then during the continuing struggle struck the bad guy upside the head with it and bent the ejector rod and then tried to shoot him again but the couldn't get the cylinder to rotate - saved the miscreant's life. .........boy would that go viral today, cop was justified but they could really turn that into an "Ain't it awful". Story

That's another nice one. Looks like the genuine "Coltwood" stocks too! I had a DS from the 50s with Coltwood stocks, and in the somewhat unusual .32 Colt New Police chambering. Traded it for my Colt Banker's Special issued to the Boston Police Department. 1930s.

I'm a Smith guy, but I love Colts too!!

Daam troop, I've always wanted to get an earlier version with the exposed rod....that is the first time I've read a credible account of that happening. But heck I've got an old Charter Bulldog .44 spec with the exposed rod, that the extractor rod set screw (in the frame by the pawl)loosens up on after a cylinder or two of ammo..it goes deeper into the frame.. I've had to open the cylinder by pulling out on the exposed rod more than a few times.......but the old girl is dependable as heck & when I was younger & had stronger wrists & hands.. loaded with Winchester .44spec Silvertips, she saw quite a bit of use as an off duty big bore handgun.

if it was a shrouded extractor rod, it would be a pain in the keester to open... and I hate the idea of using Loctite on that lil screw as it would be impossible to put heat on it without heating up the frame too. Finding a longer screw of the right size & thread would be derned hard to do...

I've got one of the newer Cobras with the shrouded ejector rod and the larger grips.

It feels great in the hand and the workmanship is first rate.

It is just a bit too nice for daily carry but it is easy to shoot and doesn't bloody my thumb the way my Airweight does.

my Agent has the shrouded rod & it is my primary carry gun... absolutely dependable, the lock work is fine & she hits point of aim well for instinctive shooting at close range...and I've had to use it at 25 yds & she did well, double action shooting as mine has the spur less factory hammer, though it still can be shot single action...

I figure my life & the safety of my loved ones trumps the increased value of a handgun that is no longer being made...this lil Agent is a joy to shoot & carry, as is the lil S&W Chiefs that I use to back it up... Carry & use the pistol you shoot the best , have trained/practiced with & are most familiar with....

That being said... when Pythons got stupid in prices.. I retired ours... So far Agents & Cobras haven't got dumb like that.

I'm happy with having just my DS. No serious interest in a Cobra or Agent. But if I found one cheap, I'd probably buy either. Last Cobra I saw was about 0% condition, and seller wouldn't budge from $400. I might have given him $150 tops.
