I bought a new Dell XPS studio with Windows 7 yesterday hoping to have an internet free windows computer to run my software collection - some work oriented items and lots of games. Out of 20 titles only three ran. The compatibility feature was useless. The POS is being returned ASAP. Does anyone know a new computer that is compatible with Windows XP software from a few (10-15) years back? Thank you! -Rick

I'm no expert but I think your out of luck.

Windows XP was realeased in 2001 and won't be supported after April 2014. Your going to have to deal with your software situation anyway. If your software is really that old then you have a big problem.

More and more computer manufacturers are going to a 64 bit operating system. Your old software may not work anyway.

Sometimes you can buy a PC with no operating system. If you do that, you can install XP on it. tigerdirect.com has some w/o the OS.

What kind of games? I've had good luck getting my old softwares to run. Usually compatibility mode of XP works... Very few times have I had to work at getting stuff to run around that.

You may have the wrong "flavor" of windows 7. I believe it is the
Windows 7 Home Premium that has the windows Xp that will allow you to play these older games.

How about the guy that sells refurbished Dells in this forums classifieds? He has a very good reputation/feedback and his prices are reasonable.

Use the new PC for Internet and keep the old one away from the internet. The internet security on the new one should be better.

...unless he wants to play on-line. I've got Red Baron 3-D on an older Windows 98 system. I used to play on-line all of the the time. I'm not even sure that RB3D will even run on a Win2k much less a Windows 7 machine.

New computer using old software

I can sympothize with you.
We bought 2 laptops with Windows 7 in them. We are having to GET the latest/updated software. Some of our programs will not not be upgradable, at all.

The most fun I had, not being a gamer, was "flying" a WWI bi-plane and it probably was an Atari cartridge. Might have been the same as it was a red plane, had twin MG and you flew against planes and had various ground targets.

Shortly after PS came out and my pard went hi-tech w/golf, Nascar and jet flyin'.

I'd still take The Great War aviation for mano a mano duelin'.

That or the field of honor, w/matching .69 caliber flintlock pistols, at daybreak on a foggy morn.
