New CS45 - S&W Snorted At Me.

I don't know about jury-rigging springs, or clipping-off round springs. Last August the bottom of my CS45 which I owned and shot on occasion since the year 2000 shear-off at the recoil rod seat just under the slide. This was with an original recoil spring and firing standard .45 Cal. ball ammo. I'm guessing that this was due to a kink in the spring during a cycle. I'll include three photos. I don't believe I even reached 1000 rounds with this original spring and sold four brand new ones never used. Regarding the spring not taken-off the S&W parts list, good luck with getting any back-ups on that note. This is a high caliber pistol and it is suggested to only use original parts for safety reasons.

I bought Wilson Combat 1911 Sentinel 22# springs for my CS45 , and cut them just about a 1/2 coil longer than the original spring. This has worked for me well.

Mal Cap what was the serial prefix on that CS45? Did s&w offer to do anything for you on that? I mean besides trying to get you to buy an m&p.

That looks like a metalurgy problem to me. 25 years of being around 3rd gen 45s and Ive never seen a failure like that. Any other members ever seen anything like that? Regards 18DAI

EKY is the prefix. It may have been manufactured in 1991. Smith honored the warranty and offered an M&P Compact 45 replacement. I declined. I didn't want another chunky .45 so I opted for the 9 Shield with Green Laserguard sight. I agree about the metallurgy but believe the failure was exasperated by a recoil spring kink or bend. The gun jammed before and since the barrel tilts it got marred on the top by the slide. A minor nick. I think the recoil rod area where it seats is a weak point if the slide is cut from one piece of solid steel. Thanks for the input.

Can someone post the part # for the springs for the CS9, CS40, & CS45?
What was the final verdict on getting them from S&W? Is it just the CS 9 that they still offer if you are willing to wait?
On a side note - what other parts should we stock up on for these models as it sounds like production will end at some point.... Thanks

Interesting that the parts list for the Gen 3 guns is like 3X longer than the M&P's.
