Does anyone know if Smith ever put lanyard rings on the 38 safety hammerless?? I just saw one,and it also has a higher ser# than I can find a reference to: ser.# 564xxx. I have just begun to study this model, and any help would be most appreciated.

dw57,
Smith & Wesson stopped shipping the 38 Safety Hammerless at about serial number 264400. Are you sure the first number was not a 2. Smith & Wesson did ship some safetys with lanyard rings but it was a special order item. It was never even offered in the catalog as an option for them. They are quite scarce. I know of one 38 and two 32 Safety Hammerless revolvers with lanyard rings and doubtless there are others. I have been looking for them for years and will pay a premium or finders fee to anyone who will locate one for me. If you have indeed found one buy it as soon as possible. But, it would not be a S&W Safety Hammerless with the serial number you mentioned. It could be one of the cheaper Smith clones. Iver Johnson made a revolver called a safety hammer, but it did not have the grip safety in the grip frame. Good luck and let us know what you have found.

cflier,
I have been fooled by the tiny, deep numeric stamping on those and the .32's.
That's definitely a possibility (the 2 as opposed to a 5).

Very possible. Someone is reading it to me over the phone. I will ask them to look again.
