Wife's 2010 Raptor hit 99,950 miles last week. So time for it to go away. That is her reasoning.
So this past weekend she heads to the local Ford dealer and buys a 2019 Raptor.
Beautiful truck, Tuxedo black, big tires etc.
I finally got to drive it this evening.
I was impressed with the ride, comfort and the performance of the twin turbo'd V6. Puts out 450 HP and it moves when you plant the accelerator. Really moves.
Then I noticed that the sound emitting from the exhaust was flat out embarrassing. Sounded like some V6 sedan with a high flow muffler.
Good lord was I disappointed. I say that with all sincerity. Took all the joy out of driving it for me.
This is an AMERICAN TRUCK!!!!! Known for it's performance, power and off road capability and it sounds like the neighbor kid's souped up Toyota Tacoma. No throaty rumble idling at a stop, no beastly roar when you stomp the gas goin down the road.
I have been a die hard Ford man all of my adult life. Never drove them because they were fast, just have had very good luck with them. But the Raptor is a muscle truck and it sounds like some Metrosexual hipster trying to have a polite argument with his girlfriend. PATHETIC

A V-6 often did have a distinctive sound difference from a V-8. Especially notable with louder mufflers. I imagine the turbos could also cause the special sound on the new Raptor.
I wonder will this truck see 99,000 miles without major engine problems?

Given the long distances we travel in the US, I can't think of anything worse than a droning aftermarket catback on a vehicle just for a particular idle sound or roar when goosed. Sounds like an expensive irritant to me.
Guess you don't ride with Harley's.

Turbocharged smaller engines are the wave of the future, unfortunately, because they help manufacturers meet government fuel economy requirements. Take Cadillac, for example. The base engine in most Cadillacs is a puny four cylinder turbo. Most Cadillac engine upgrades are V-6s. You have to look pretty hard (and pay a big premium) to get a Cadillac V-8. Remember when all Cadillacs came with smooth, powerful V-8s as standard equipment? Sadly, those days are gone forever. Your friendly Cadillac salesperson will tell you, "Yes, most of our cars are four cylinder models, but they put out as much horsepower as a V-8!" That may be so, but is it truly a Cadillac if the engine makes an ugly strangled rice rocket sound when you step on the gas? Bleah!

And it may get worse. In the future, I can see customers walking into their Cadillac dealer and finding that the only available engine has one cylinder. The salesperson will tell them, "Yes we only offer half-liter, one-cylinder Cadillac engines these days, but because each engine has ten turbochargers, it puts out 500 horsepower, and gets 60 miles per gallon! And if you don't like how it sounds, we offer the optional engine sound tuning upgrade. Using a simple slide control on your electronic display, your can alter your engine sound from a luxurious, smooth "pocketa-pocketa", to a sporty, rough "pocketa-pocketa."

I can hardly wait.
 
I see a lot of turbo motor F trucks with high mileage and no problems. My friend had to wait and look long and hard to find a 5.0 V8, they are out there but not very many. I love the sound of a V8 but I think it is on the way out.
 
It is really not my problem to worry about. It is her truck. I just do not care for the direction Ford has taken with their light trucks.
 
Sadly, American companies just don't build vehicles like they used to.
It's not limited to American car manufacturers, all of them seem to be going cheaper. Lots more plastic instead of metal and plastic parts that used to be thick plastic are now thin plastic. Engines designs are going away from 8 and even 6 cylinders, the future is turbocharging, which increases heat under the hood and makes for a more complex engine. Manual transmissions are all but gone and automatic transmissions are going to very complex 8 speed designs or those laggy, sluggish, heat generating continuously variable types.
 
I have a relatively new 2019 F150 with the 3.5 EcoBoost and absolutely could not be happier with it. This truck does EVERYTHING I ask of it including towing my 7,000 lb travel trailer with ease (rated for 13,200). This one's 375 HP (not sure what they do to the Raptor motor to push it to 450?). People that have driven it are amazed at the quickness and torque of this truck (including those who drive the V8 Silverados).

And to those that question the longevity of the V6 turbos, I couldn't care less as I trade them every two years! And .... I love the "whisper" sound of the turbos!

The EPA and "The Noise Police" have made laws & regulations more restrictive and so the manufacturers gave to adhere. Weather or not they are able to achieve a "good sound" and comply is out of my realm - but it certainly would not surprise me.
