The town of Nelson Georgia has passed an ordinance requiring households to own a gun. I for one, would not normally be in love with this kind of gun law either. Fortunately, they crafted the law so that you don't have to go through a background check, spend money, take a class, jump through any hoops if you don't want to own a gun -

The ordinance exempts convicted felons and those who suffer from certain physical or mental disabilities, as well as anyone who objects to gun ownership. The ordinance also doesn't include any penalty for those who don't comply.

More than anything else, it seems more a move to thumb their noses at some folks that need a good nose thumbing.

I think the town of Kennesaw, Ga. passed a similar law many years ago, in response to the city of Morton Grove, Ill., banning the ownership of handguns (if not all guns, it was a long time ago). it was more a thumb your nose at anti-gun laws than anything else, as you speculated.

Still it's a law, and the fewer laws we have the better I like it. While I don't believe anyone has the right to tell me I can't own a gun, I don't think I have to right to tell anyone else they must.

Having said that, there is historical precident. Back in the early colonial period, there were laws requiring every family (every free man maybe) to own a musket, powder and shot, and to drill with them regularly. I know there were laws in Virginia and probably elsewhere, requiring the carrying of firearms to church. These laws were of course in response to a real threat of Indian attack.

I live within spitting distance (almost) of Nelson GA. The law does not tell anyone they must own a gun. The law is written in a way that is supports the 2nd, in that it assures that the right cannot be taken away. I agree that the fewer laws we have, the better off we are, but one law that prevents the taking away of any of our God given rights is a good law.

There have been laws in this country requiring firearm ownership longer than we've actually been a country.

Nothing like a law that requires you to obey it... unless you don't want to...

Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate anything done to fly in the face of anti-gunners. But that law kind of makes those people look silly.

I like it! It inspires me to push for a John Wayne "Fill Yore Hand Pilgrim" law in my small hamlet. You don't have to abide by it, but, if you don't have a smoker in your hand you have to leave by midnight, if you want to , that is.;)
