Hello all,

I am a new member from IN. I have had an S&W .357 mag for a while now and love it; however, its not that practical for CCW. I did a lot of looking around and landed on the Shield, it won me out in all areas. What do y'all have to say? suggestions on IWB holsters (im pretty sure Ima get one from Tommy Theis), sights, etc.?

And yes ... I know I will have to wait for the gun .... I'm already on the list.

Thanks, and please leave any thoughts on the subject.

Welcome from VA, this is a great place to get advise on a wide variety of topics. As to the Shield, good choice although I don't own one I have shot one frequently and do like it. As a retired LEO that started in the late 60's I still carry a small .38 since it fits in a pocket, & that is where my comfort level is.

Please post pics w/a range report once your Shield comes in.

I'll do my best. It'll take a while to get and I'm in school, but I'll def throw some pics up when I get it. And a range report w/ some pics too.

I'm going with the 9mm. Although, I thought I heard that S&W might make a conversion kit (allowing the 9 to be converted to .40)

Anybody heard the same?

Welcome...congrats on the Shield. I would get the IWB Crossbreed Supertuck or similar.

Welcome and congrats on the Shield. That will probably be my next handgun purchase. As for a holster, you might consider an Old Faithful Stage 3 IWB...similar to the Crossbread, but the kit is about half the cost. I've had mine for about five weeks and it works great for my Sigma 9mm. And I echo the other comments...pictures and a range report when you can.

Thanks a lot Rev! They look pretty legit. How would u rate the comfortablility?

I think they are very comfortable, especially after breaking in. Like any holster, especially IWB, you have some trial and error until you find the best location, the best cant, etc. Once it is "dialed in" it works very well. Keep in mind it is not as comfortable as an OWB, however it is much more concealable. In fact, my family doesn't even know when I'm carrying... ;)

Yeah, but that's the point right? "always carry, never tell"

and I would get the stage 3 if I hadn't heard back from Tommy Theis this mornin. He has helped me out and I told him if he could, i would definitely buy from him (I like to be a man of my word). Also, he has choices for belt clips that i like a bit better. Ima get a horsehide assembled with the clips i want OTD for 55.

thanks again for the suggestion - I'll most definitely look into it for the next gun.

I've never used a Theis holster, but it looks very similar and I've heard good things about them. The main reason I chose the Old Faithful, other than the cost savings, is that it is screwed together rather than riveted. That allows for adjusting the retention after wearing the leather in. But, to each his own. I'm certain you'll enjoy the Theis, and you are correct..."always carry and never tell." As long as your holster choice is right for you, you'll be more inclined to carry all of the time...and that's what's important.

on holsters...

i called Blackhawk! and they said that if they make a holster for the shield it will come out at some big show in Jan 2013... but they said they had no definite idea if it was in the works...

Hi, welcome to the forums. I have the shield in .40 cal. You saved yourself a lot of headache getting the 9mm. As for holsters, I use a Crossbreed supertuck and carry at about 4 o'clock position. I can wear a t shirt untucked and you would never know I have it on. I can drive in comfort, I can sit in a chair and lounge and never really notice it. Good luck with your holster of choice. I think the best money is with crossbreed, however, I did get a Foxx IWB for my XD 9 sub compact, which is very similar and it only cost 39 bucks, and it was shipped to my home in 4 days from ordering. Foxx is really worth looking into. check on ebay.

Thanks for the input Hunter, and yea i looked at the crossbreed supertuck and the Theis holster looked pretty much the same. I also looked at Foxx. I went with Tommy Theis because i had already shared some emails with him and I liked the thought of contributing to "the little guy" who makes holsters as a one man show. His product looks and functions (per reviews) just like the crossbreeds, foxx, etc. Plus i can get the upgrades i want, tax, and shipping for 55 OTD.

I know it doesnt have retention screws but i read a few reviews that said that Tommy will tell you over the phone how to increase retention should it ever get lax!

Two thumbs up for Tommy Theis. I have one of his horsehide rigs for my Glock 17. I received it about three days after I ordered it. All of my dealings with directly with the man himself, and as you already know, he appears to be a good guy to deal with. I have had a CB Supertuck in the past, and I think the Theis holsters are equal to the SuperTuck.

Welcome to the forum. Excellent choice on the Shield 9 as you can't go wrong on the 9 compared to the .40 bugs. I am using the DeSantis sof-tuck and it is first IWB holster I have ever used and the shield is my first CC weapon so what would I know. I do know all the pants I wear are tight in the waist which is the way I like them so getting an IWB holster in there is kind of tight. The Sof-Tuck is very soft leather and is very comfortable so I really like that but with having to wear it in tight waisted pants it makes a little tough to draw but it is what it is. You will enjoy your shield when you get it and again welcome.

thanks a lot sidewinder. i looked at the sof-tuk too in my search, almost got it .... but i ordered from theis holsters couple days ago. now just waiting on the gun .... :(

You have it kinda backwards it is possible to take a 40 caliber barrel out and replace it with either a 357SIG or a 9mm barrel in a 40 caliber slide you can go down in caliber but not up. This is what is have done with my Full size 40 as well as my 40 compact. It is just a matter of swapping out barrels with the 357 and 40 and with the 9mm you should use the magazine that comes with the 9 millimeter or the last round might not chamber or other issues!
