My wife and I just purchased a pair of J frames for self defense; a 442 for me and a 642 for her. Now it's time to get in some range time and then get out CHLs. We also have an older S&W 38 Special CTG we want to have restored possibly for target shooting. It was her great grand father's so we're trying to research the history of both he and the gun. He was a Texas Ranger in the early 1900s, not sure if the gun was his service weapon or not.

Welcome!
Congrats on the purchase of two great guns!
Good luck with the CCL test!

Welcome from Iowa.
Tell us more about the revolver, including barrel length, sights and serial # (found on the bottom of butt) and we might be able to tell you a little bit about it.

3" barrell marked 38 S&W Special CTG. The last patent date on the barrell is Dec 29, 1914 and made in Springfield, Mass. 4 screws on the side and 1 in front of the trigger guard. Serial number is 612830.

That puts it's DOB at the early 40s, possibly late 30s.
I take it it has fixed sights. It would be a Military and Police model, later to be called the Model 10 (In 1957).
Are you measuring the barrel from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle?

I'm taking it and an EIG Model E15 22 caliber with a 5" barrell to the gunsmith tomorrow; they both need a liitle service and a real good cleaning. The S&W is so gummed up from city at least 20 years I can't even get the cylinder open. Hoping to end up with a nice set of target pistols.

Welcome from Texas russp1. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.
