I have two local gun shops that I check when I get a chance. I haven't been looking for anything in particular, just keeping my eyes open.

Late this last week, a couple of nice k frames came in. One in each shop.

This model 19:

And a model 64 with a 4 inch pencil barrel. I did not have my phone with me when I found the 64.

The model 19 has a few spots and a little rust for $269. The model 64 is in decent shape with wood panels for $250. I could probably wiggle a little bit on the 64. But, the 19 is firm. No papers or boxes.

I can buy one. I don't have a way to buy them both even with layaway. Plus, except for my j frame, all of my Smiths are 4 inch guns. So, I'm kinda looking for 6, 3 or 2 inch guns for something different.

So I have a 686 and a 65. The blue 19 would be different, but the pencil barreled stainless 64 would be cool.

I'm leaning towards the 64. I wish I had a picture.

TELL US WHERE. I would like to find either of them for those prices. I always wanted a model 64 with the standard barrel. Oh well maybe someday.

If it were me, I'd opt for the 19. There are a lot more 64's around to choose from. Good luck on your quest! Bob

You didn't mention if your priority is collecting or shooting these. You already have two 4" .357s (both stainless). The 19 looks to be a good shooter at a very good price but has rust; the 64 is also at a very good price but is another 4" stainless gun. If I were you, rust is a deal-killer and I would get the 64. Decisions, decisions ;) .

When I buy something, I do it with shooting them in mind. But, some end up sitting because I will pick up my 686 when I head to the range. I would end up buying another 38. cal 4 inch shooter that might sit around a lot.

I do see 19s now and then, but I have never seen a pencil barreled 64. I can clean up a stainless gun, but I can't do much with the blued finish, which is ok because it would still look great cleaned with original stocks.

Your right Alan, decisions, decisions.

You can't go wrong with either one. At those prices, you could get your investment back out at any time. (Note that I always call it an 'investment' instead of a 'cost')

The 19 has the target sights and partial-lug barrel, making it, IMHO, a more balanced version of the 686. The 64 tapered-barrel is a slightly better balanced version (again - just IMHO) of the 65 with the same combat sights, but it'll have a little bit more recoil - but that won't matter because you'll only be able to shoot 38's out of it.

So the question is; which one do YOU like better?

I'd go with the 19. For the prices they're asking, I'd be tempeted to get both.

I have one of those tapered barrel 64's and have been told they were only made with that barrel on the original run. The -1 and newer models didn't have that barrel. If I'm wrong then someone please correct me. I feel like that's a steal on a 19-5 or whatever that is.
