Hi All,
New to the forum. I got here via a purchase of M&P 10 last summer. I have only had the gun out 3 times since new. Not good. I took it apart and oiled it up. I removed a few filings from the bolt area and put it back together. At the firing range for the first time, the rifle fired off the first 10 or 12 rounds fine, but quickly started to "jam" up. It wouldn't not eject spent brass. It would try to load the new bullet but the point would be blocked. Pull out the magazine and pull back on the charger, clear it out and start all over again. Sometimes, it will not fire the new ammo. Pull back charger again, eject and try again. Took it home, took apart and clean. Gas ring splits are not in a line. I do not detect anymore filings etc. I have been using Mag Tech ammo. I use the same brand in my AR-15 and it works perfectly. I am fairly new to these rifles having the 15 a little over 2 years but no problems even close to this. Questions are:
Is this M&P 10 a problematic unit? I see more than a few issues with it on this site.
Is the next course of action to take it in for warranty work?
Thanks!

I have not had any problems with mine that I didn't cause. It sounds like giving S&W a call might be in order. It sounds like there might be more than one issue going on here. It seems most have been happy with their rifles but, as you said, there have been a few that had problems. I don't know why that might be since there isn't much reported in the M&P15 or M&P15-22 sections. Same rifle and system, everything is just bigger.

You can call S&W but dont be afraid to try different ammunition. If the problem persists you can have the factory check it out.
Good luck
Jim

MP-10s are tuned to run on full pressure commercial ammo. Lower pressure ammo will cause short stroking. Also, MP-10 extractor springs are weak. I suspect the same may be true of the ejector spring. That can cause feed problems.

My new 16" M&P-10 sport that I picked up last month is also having problems. It short strokes, jams, dents the brass, and scrapes the next round. S&W said they knew what the cause was and they have it again. They told me to not expect to see my brand new rifle for 2 months. Total nonsense. My 223 M&P sport I got at the same time ran perfectly before and after swapping the gas block etc. etc. I am now wishing I would have skipped the 308.
