Hi,
Found a good deal on an M&P core 5" and a Leupold Deltapoint and after searching the forum I am still unclear regarding co-witnessing. With the M&P sights the POI is "behind" the dot on the front sight. So in order to get the Leupold dot POA to POI it lies over the front sight making it difficult see. It also puts the dot low in the glass.

Any put on lower front sights or remove sights all together?

Any tips for red dot newbie?

Thanks

Ignore the iron sights while using the red dot. Just put the dot on the target. The dot can be anywhere in the optical window.

Ignore, turn off, or remove the battery from your RDS then aim in using the sights. If you can use the sights and you are looking through the optical window then you have co-witness. The terms "absolute/center" and "lower-third" just describe which part of the window you are looking through when you do the above.

There is one coincidence between the sights and red dot. If you aim in with the sights the dot should line up with them. This is a useful means of checking zero. If the sights and dot don't line up, then one or both has gotten knocked out of alignment. If they do line up, then they are both still zeroed (since it's unlikely that both would be knocked off target the same amount.) It is also useful for initial zero by aligning the dot to the sights.

Personally, without red dot experience with this particular pistol, I would sight/zero the pistol/red dot at 10 yds or whatever distance you want POI to be.

In the case of 10 yds, POI at 3-yds will be slight lower, and at 20 yds it will be slightly higher.

I (personally) would then ignore the iron sights unless the red dot were to fail or be turned off. With my Ruger 10/45 and red dot, I can only use the red dot, but its fine that way being its only a range pistol. I would prefer to have the dot in the center of the glass even if the iron sights would be lower.

I'm sure you'll get a handful of opinions on this.
