New member from Florida with questions

Moving quickly past the introductions, I've joined this forum to find out more information on my SW40F. Acquired the weapon (for free!) from a formal naval officer, whose wife would not let him keep it. Don't have any information on it, and S&W no longer manufactures the same model. Wondering why, if there's anything about it I should know, what's the current equivalent, etc.
