Has anyone had a chance to try either of these revolvers yet? I assume they are pretty scarce, if available at all.

Had my new 986 for about three week. Very nice shooting gun. I have already replaced the sites (green fiber up front and white outline rear) and put a set of Ahernds round to square finger grove wood grips on it. The weekend I got it I was teaching so I took it with me and let everyone in class shoot it. It was well received by everyone.

The 986 series is filtering out into the retail world on a very limited basis. I have not personally seen one to handle. The 929 Performance Center revolver hasn't shown up yet. It seems the PC wasn't near ready to ship when the gun was displayed at SHOT.

986

Very accurate. Black patridge front sight needs to go. FO or gold bead is in the near future. Maybe an LPA rear.

Dumb question first: do they require the use of moon clips? How does recoil compare to a 627 or a 686 shooting 38 +p?

They both require moonclips. Very few people have had a chance to shoot these new guns so first hand comments on recoil are few too. Keep in mind there are lots of choices in 9mm ammo from 115gr to 147gr so recoil can be adjusted by trying different ammo or handloading your own.
