New to the forum. Been lurking for a little while since purchasing a 15/22. Really love shooting the .22 rifle and decided to go ahead and pick up its bigger brother. Found the 15 OR for a decent price. Now my problem as you can see from my pic is, I have taticooled the .22 and I want to do the same with the 5.56. My confusion is in the rail/handguard. I want something that looks like the ladder system on the .22 but all the ones I have found are like 300 bux. Anyone have any suggestions. Sorry for the crappy cell pic.

There are tons of rail systems out there, from simple drop in replacements, to free float systems. And the prices range from around $60 to whatever you are willing to pay!

Sorry forgot to mention the most important thing, the large gas block. I am really knew to these guns and not a gunsmith at all. So I should have worded better. Are there any hand guards ladders that work with that gas block or should I change the gas block and then the hand guard?

Sounds like you want to extend the rail past the gas block...that does limit your choices some. You will need to get a low profile gas block to extend the rail over it. Here is the rail that I believe S&W is using on the 15T.

AR-15 Free Float Quad Rail Rifle Length Leapers UTG PRO Aircraft Aluminum Made in the USA

I wonder if you could use this one without having to replace the gas block...might have to use a dremel a little, but would let you do it on the cheap...

If you take a quality photo of your new rifle's gas block/front site you may get some better answers. I can't see exactly what you have. You will likely need a new gas block if you want an extended front quad-rail system. Why bother? If 300 dollars for mods seems expensive, then why not leave it alone. It won't help it shoot better and meh make it heavier.

It's the stock OR gas block. I don't mind spending money but I do not like to over pay for things. I basically want the same setup as my 15-22 has but maybe not polymer rails. Not sure on that part though.

You don't want polymer rails! :D

If you are just wanting to mount a vertical or angled grip, you could buy just a piece of rail that would bold to the existing handguard.

I really want the same setup as the 15/22. Same length, same bipod, same afg, same ladder covers, etc.. what product would give me the ability to do so?

Just no polymer lol (well maybe no polymer:)

Well, this product would...
Product: Model M&P15T - 5.56 mm, Tactical

Short of that, you will have to replace the gas block with a micro gas block and then pick a rail system. If you replace the gas block, the first one I linked should give you what you want at a low cost.

That is a whole gun though? Lol.. I just need the front rail system. Sorry for all the newb questions. These are my first ar style rifles and am fairly new to gun ownership overall. Really like this forum though. Am getting pretty addicted to the customization of these rifles. Put a decent amount of stuff on the .22 and love shooting it.

Yes, that link was for a whole different rifle...sorry, being a smart butt, just can't help myself sometimes. :D

The first link I was referring to was up in my earlier response in this thread...I linked two rail systems. One requires you to replace the gas block, which would be the best way to go. The second has a cut out for a front sight base, and your gas block might fit, but it might not without some modification.

Here it is again for ya http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/ARR-398

Ah, lol..gotcha. Yeah that gun is actually the one I should have bought, but everyone is asking astronomical prices and I found this one for 1300 brand new with three magpul magazines. Figured it was the best deal and I was gonna customize it anyways. Just didn't know about the large gas block and it didn't have a rail system. I guess I'll have to do the gas block swap and buy the other rail system. Are the ones you linked considered quad rails?

Edit: Nvrm lol says quad rail on the link haha doh!

So, after doing more research, determined I want to swap the gas block for a low profile or micro one and then put on a 10" aluminum free float quad rail. So..lol..getting ready to watch the videos on this procedure, but I really would feel more comfortable confirming with you kind folks. What gas block should I get? And what free float 10" aluminum black simple inexpensive yet durable quad rail should I get? Also what special tools will I need to complete this project?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that 10" quad rail, inexpensive, durable, and free-float all fit together in the same sentence.

Which ones have you looked at so far that come close to fitting your requirements? Once we look at them, we can comment on them.

I recently purchased a M&P15 OR, with gas piston. I added small tapered picatinny rails to the top and bottom of the front stock. The taper compensated for the angle of the original stock to make the mounting surface parallel to the barrel. That allowed me to add any picatinny rail mountable piece, for a fraction of the cost.

Unless you want to add stuff on the sides, otherwise my input wont help.

UTG Pro Model 4/15 Mid Length Free Float Quad Rail System

This is the one I was thinking. It says round 9", would prefer ten, but next size up is 13". So think this one is okay? Based on search results on this forum it seems pretty decent. This one or the omega. What ya think?

So how hard is this swap? And what tools will I need? I know I know..I am gonna search and watch the YouTube videos. Just y'all know for sure..it is the s&w forum, right? Lol

Okay, so how about this one:

https://danieldefense.com/rail-systems/omega-rail-9-0-mid-length.html

Says its user friendly install, but I think that is only for rifles without the OR big gas block. So what makes the Omega one double the price of the UTG one? Also, what makes it so user friendly to install? Is it a two piece? It doesnt really say. This stuff is so confusing lol. So many options and slightly different variations. From the videos I watched it looks like a dremel and a couple bladed screw drivers is what I will need as far as a two piece handguard, but I dont know about the gas block tool requirements. I guess Ill watch another video lol.

Here's what I would suggest. You have the 15-22. Use it as a test bed. Mind that the AR-15 is a heavier firearm, and you may end up with a big brick if you make it into a copy of what *should* be your test-platform gun. Figure out where you like your handgrip, light, etc.... And then figure out what you minimally need to do to the AR to accommodate your preferences. Just my 2 cents....take it for what it's worth.
