Hello Everyone,

My name is Ron and I just picked up my 1st pistol. Full size m&p 9 with thumb saftey. Basic backround on me, I never grew up around weapons, and this year I decided this is something I wanted to be more familiar with being in the bussiness I am, I wanted to be able to protect myself and my family after being
Followed home few times. I shot over 30 pistols at a local range and narrowed down the mp9 and sig p229, the mp9 won my vote for my 1st pistol.

Plans:
Talon grips, I noticed my hands get little sweaty at the range and after few rounds the gun let's a little slippery.

Veridian x5l green/light combo

I been reading and viewing YouTube videos on how to clean, and I noticed no one uses the same products or methods. Below I made a basket on amazon on what I think I need, what do you guys think? Anything I'm
Missing or something which is not needed? Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to the forum

-I really don't think you need the extra brushes. The solvents break down fouling which is easily removed. (unless you go a long time w/o cleaning)
-I prefer SuperLube gun grease (it wont separate out), but any will work
-The boresnake, patches, and ballistol is not really needed. You can make your own patches from old clothes, etc.
-Those cleaning swabs are quite handy as regular Q tips are short and they leave lots of cotton fibers behind.
-Get some BreakFree or GunSlick bore cleaning foam. You leave it in for a while and it breaks down the copper fouling.

Hope this helps

I think you will have everything you will need and then some. I use clp, bore snakes, an old tooth brush, q-tips and pieces of an old t-shirt to clean my guns. The only thing I would add to your cleaning equipment is a gun cleaning mat, this will lessen the likely hood of the misses getting upset if you spill something or scratch the table.

A good grip is more than 50% of accuracy with a pistol. Good luck and have fun.

You might wan to read more on that Tetra gun grease. There are plenty of users that said it caused rust to the applied areas.

I use it on the frame slide mounts, a couple dabs on the barrel and where the trigger bar hits the sear.

Absolute zero issues with mine.

Got a link to users complaining it causes rust? I use Tetra products exclusively, I'd like to read that.
Thanks...

Interesting. We have been using it since the '80's on our 1911's and we never have experienced rust. Of course we lived in SoCal at the time, so not as much humidity.

First of all congrats! You will really enjoy your new 9.

I use CLP break free wipes, bore brush, patches and a little gun grease (little dab will do you) for slide.

I then finish up with 3 passes with a bore snake.

PS- My FS has been pretty much flawless, eats anything put in it and only had one jam first day I took it out (going on 2,000 rounds now) ;)

My SD preferred choice for ammo is Corbon DPX 115 +p.

Spray cans of oil worry me with first time gun owners. PLEASE don't spray oil into the action, especially the slide and striker. You will make a huge mess if you do. The striker channel is self-lubricating and should be cleaned, but not oiled. At most, maybe a small drop of Remoil, which is very thin.

Better yet, cancel the spray oil can and get a small bottle to apply one drop at a time only where needed.

I've noticed that those of us using M&Ps in competition clean more and use less lube than the average owner. Excess lube attracts dirt and makes gunk. There is no need to oil the outside of the gun; a little Johnson's floor wax works better and is not messy.

Thank you all for you advise, I will only purchase the following

Narrow Qtips.
Tetra Greace for the metal contact points or just put a qtip with clp on the points?
CLP Break Free CLP Multi-Surface Weapon Wipes
Handgun kit 1st link so I have the rods and liquor form clp aswell.

Only reason why I decided to go with the balistol were these videos on YouTube praising that stuff. Also for cleaning im was going to so it like before,so is this the wrong way of cleaning? Is there a video you guys reccomed?

I like Ballistol and use it on my black powder guns. It works well and is not petroleum based. The Ballistol does a good job getting the black powder residue out with a minimum amount of scrubbing.

For my modern guns I use Breakfree CLP, bore snake and a rag.

Heed the advice above about using the oil sparingly. A little goes a long way.

Here's a good video about cleaning (yes, it's a Glock, but the principles are the same):
