New offering from Federal in 9mm

I bought 3 boxes of 9mm and a box of 40cal. Both ran through my 40 cal FS and 9mm Shield without a hiccup. A friend of mine ran a box of the 9mm through his Springfield Armory XDS and had several double stack failures. He had no problems with the brass cased ammo.

I have used 9mm Herters(Cabelas brand) alluminum case many times. It is made by Blazer. Never had a problem, clean accurate. good range ammo. On sale it,s $14/50.

I've been using Federal aluminum now for about one month. I've shot at least five boxes of .45 and five boxes of 9mm that my local Wally sells for $14.97 and $9.97. So far they are accurate and 100% reliable in my 4506 and 39-2. Since I do not reload, this is a BIG savings for me and i will continue to use it. I will be buying some .40 S&W Federal aluminum today for my weekly trip to the range, which has no issues with aluminum.

Also during this same period I shot a couple of boxes of Perfecta brass case .45 (also from Wally) in my otherwise super reliable, non finicky 4506. I had FTFs and FTEs using three different mags. I switched to the Federal aluminum and had perfect results with the same three mags.

Range Ethics

I would not shoot at a range that prohibited either reloads or any ammo not in brass cases. Some ranges even have the audacity to prohibit you from picking up your own brass for "safety" reasons.

If challenged, ask them whether or not they report the sale of scrap brass as miscellaneous income on their tax returns. In my neck of the woods, I can get $1.70 a pound for brass cartridge casings. You will receive one of two responses: either you will be asked to leave or they will have a sudden change in ammo policy.

I have witnessed range staff so proprietary regarding brass that there was no doubt in my mind that the brass represented a significant source of unreported income to them.

I bought 250 rounds today. We'll see how it shoots. If it functions well I'm going back and get the rest! :)

Any word on how these worked in your Shield? My local Wally world has a good amount of them for about $10.50 a box and I'm thinking about picking some up for my Shield as well.

I've shot 2 boxes in my 9mm Shield now and 3 boxes of .45 in my SAR K2. No problems with either.
I notice the casings really fly with the .45. The guy at the range says they've really been seeing a lot of it. The Walmarts around here have been well loaded with it.

My range forbids steel case (there was a fire that the fire marshal attributed to sparks from steel cases against the cement floors combined with powder residue). Aluminum is allowed. Yes, they sell the brass to recycling companies. Yes, you can pick up YOUR brass that falls behind the firing line. I generally don't, as my membership as retired public service gives me free access during the week, and costs very little compared to other ranges. And I have been there for the "bucketing". Trust me, not a job you would want.

Missed this - the warranty and manual on my H&K forbids steel / aluminum cases, apparently because of the stepped chamber. Even spent brass has a "belt" and a bulge under. I suspect that they fear the aluminum casing might split.

I have not used aluminum in my shield. I won't use anything but brass in my 1911's out of general principle.

But yes, the local WMs have it in 9 and 45.
