Well its here!

Posted earlier about the new old stock 6946 acquired on Gunbroker. Spoke to the seller and its an unissued police trade in.

It got here and its all I hoped for. Feels great in the hand and with the DAO trigger farther back in the trigger guard, the first pad of my finger falls perfectly on it. Trigger feel is smooth and light.

Then came the hard choice: do I really want to shoot a gun in this condition? Well last Friday I took the pistol to the range and let it roar. The first group amazed me. After the first shot was a little high, the next 6 shot into a happy face! I think its a sign that the 6946 is happy to be out of the box and shooting. :D

The remainder of the magazine shot into about 2" at 15 yards on another target. The gun probably could have shot this well at 25, but I cannot see that well anymore. Load was Speer 124 grain Gold Dot. Shot another 150 124 grain FMJ handloads before the session was over. Not one malfunction. This is a great pistol!

Nice shooting JeepinSoldier, and congrats on having this pistol in hand finally!

Unissued, New Old Stock, S&W 3rd Gen... I love to see those words all together, gets my heart rate up. :D

My taste runs to the TDA side of the family, but I can fully appreciate the excitement of a new gun like this for DAO fans. Great find man, have fun with her!

Very nice! :)

Bet that's what your face was like after shooting it as well. :D

Yup!

Its amazing what a really good trigger will do. I really liked the way the 6906 with the full size 5906 magazine and adapter felt in my hand, balanced, and shot, but the trigger is atrocious.

The 6946 is all that is great in the other gun with a great trigger. This one is a keeper for sure! With night sights it will be perfect.

I'm not giving up on the 6906 yet. If I can find a smith that can make the trigger feel like the one in my 457 Ill keep it.

Completely understand about the trigger, I've gotten spoiled by the trigger on my Shorty.

How's the trigger feel on it? Is it like a DA revolver or more like a long preset trigger like on a LC9? Thanks.

I have never shot an LC 9, but I would have to say that it feels more like a preset trigger than a double action revolver trigger.

I have a fantastic Model 65 that must have had a trigger job by somebody who knew what they were doing. I also have a 1911 with a great trigger, but one that has not been lightened to 2 pounds if you know what I mean.

The 6946 feels more like the cocked 1911, which I assume it is because its partially cocked. There is the slightest amount of takeup, then smooth and not too heavy pull weight, then the gun fires with only about 1/4 to one half of the travel of the 6906.

Feels like about 8 pounds to my unscientific, not calibrated finger? :)

I had the trigger worked on in my Beretta M9 with smoothing and a 'D' spring. It was reported that the DA trigger is now 9 pounds. The 6946 feels better out of the box than the worked on Beretta and just a little lighter pull.

The pull weight feels just heavy enough to prevent firing inadvertently but light enough to not feel like a finger exercise machine. Just riiiiiight. :D

For the 6906 you might Google Teddy Jacobson, Actions By T. Mr. Jacobson did an trigger job on a 3913 of mine that is very nice. He is highly regarded if he is still taking work.

Thanks for the recommendation! His website looks like he is still taking work. Will he do the work without engraving his logo on the gun?

Yes, he asked me if I wanted the logo or not. His reputation is such that I believe the logo will enhance the pistols value - unless of course you are talking about a very limited production.
