My understanding is that, "IN GOD WE TRUST" first appeared on American coins during the Civil War, when the nation became even more fervently religious.
Frankly, I don't care whether the phrase is on there.
I don't subscribe to any organized religion but I do believe in a higher being and the concepts of Heaven and Hell.
I don't care what anyone believes, even atheists, as long as everyone treats each other with dignity, respect and kindness.
Odd how those four words seem to create such hate and derision.
I wonder how Jesus, Buddha or Confucius would have felt about it?
My guess is that they would have shrugged at the words, and been more interested in whether you use some of your money to help those in need.
