New owner 38/44 Outdoorsman

No markings on the sights. The target grips have a football shaped relief.
Sadly the Magnas aren't numbered to the gun, all the other numbers match. I was afraid in my excitement I may have paid too much. $1040 OTD including the target grips.

Not too much as an interesting shooter. Consider that if this gun was in excellent condition and completely original it would have been 50% - 75% more. Matching grips don't make much difference in the value with a modified pistol. Also consider that the target grips can be resold for $100 - $150 pretty easily.

Great Revolvers, I just picked up a postwar Outdoorsman 2 Gunshows ago $1100. there was a discussion among the few S&W aficionados there. Gentleman had it priced at $1300. I went to look on the last afternoon of the show and he said he would take less. After I bought it, I ask the other experts how they missed the Cokes that were on it? All expressed surprise, they so fixed on price they didn't check it close and never noticed the cokes.

That's the best way to buy cokes!

tybochip,
Congratulations on your find. I have yet to come across an Outdoorsman in many years of perusing gun stores and pawn shops. I think you did well, and even more so with the late-'70s-to-early-'80s target stocks.

By the way, the target stocks you have are righteous Gonçalo Alves that were ubiquitous at that time. Evidently, that was the commonly supplied wood.

Thanks for the info on the grips. Since I have target stocks on all my K frames I am tempted to put them on the 38/44 but they are in such great shape I don't want to ding them up. I probably should sell them to get rid of the temptation. I do like your Highway Patrolman. My next search.

The rear sight looks like it would cradle the "black", while letting the front sight rest just at 6 o'clock. Evidently a very serious bullseye shooter. Set that up at 25 yards and get an official NRA Bullseye target and see if the sights don't just cradle the black. Let us know.
