New owner 686- muzzle damage

Hello all,
Just purchased my first revolver a 686 plus 4". I love it. While cleaning I noticed very heavy dents / impressions on the muzzle. Is this normal for a brand new $800 revolver? Any input is appreciated! Thank you

Welcome to the S&W Forum.

The circular depression around the muzzle should not be there.

Assuming you purchased this as a new revolver I would do one of two things.
1. Contact the store from where you purchased it and see if they have a duplicate and would trade you for it.
2. Send it back to S&W. I have found on the three occasions I have contact S&W via customer service email, easily accessed via their website, that the have responded quickly. I would guess they'd send you a prepaid mailing label with explicit instructions on shipping it back to them and they'd be able to get it fixed for you and back to you in a reasonable period of time. It's also possible the store you bought it from would be willing to handle the contact with S&W and the shipping.

While it looks like ****, there will likely be no degradation of performance from those marks. I would hope that S&W would fix this, but it appears to be a cosmetic issue. It's issues like these that drive up the price of older Smiths. There were issues back then too, but just not as many.

Might want to shoot it first before you send it back.

I have a 60-15 with a small "bump" on one part of hte muzzle. Almost like a flake of metal instead of the circular indentation your 686 has. But the gun is far more accurate that I am, so I figured what the heck.

From what I can see I wouldn't call it damage. It looks more like a rotary mark from being machined on a lathe and not finished very well. It looks purely cosmetic but for that money it should not be there.

Absolutely nothing wrong with sending it back.

But, if it were me... I'd say "Rats ! I wish I would have noticed that before I purchased it."

After that, I would enjoy shooting the 686 and never notice it again.

I am still waiting to get my M66-8 snub back after 6 weeks.
They had it near the end of May.

Well, I sent the 686 back with a detailed request letter. It took a litle over 1 month, but my revolver came back looking absolutely amazing. It looks better then new! Definitetley worth the wait. Thanks for all of your support and replies. Paul
