I just purchased a M&P 40. I am relativly knew to shooting. I did have range training and gun safety wayyy back in my Boy Scout days. I have a Sig P250 that I am happy with but after shooting a friends M&P, I had to get one. I have noticed a few posts about using the 9mm barrel, where can I get a stock 9mm barrel? There weren't any listed on the SW website.

New M&P owner myself, but if you search the forum you will see many answers to your question but to summary it all for convenience. You can put in a .357 barrel and use the same magazines as you see your clips are marked .40/.357 S&W does make the .357 barrel. You can put a 9mm barrel in at your own risk because its smaller and doesn't fit right there is always some danger. It voids warranty and you need to buy 9mm mags for it to work. Somebody I can't remember the name make a 9mm conversion kit but the jury is still out on its reliability. For the cost of the conversion kit and new mags you could just get a 9mm SD/Sigma... so why go through the trouble isn't it more fun to own multiple guns.

Midway has factory barrels for about $65. With discounts I have seen them for $59. They work fine switching a 40 to a 9. The hole in the center of the barrel is smaller because the bullet is smaller. Easy enough for S&W to make 10 billion blanks and drill out the size of the caliber instead of making an entirely new barrel for each caliber.

None of the M&P's take 'clips'. The magazines however are the same for the 40/357 because basically the casing is the same. The 9 is a smaller casing so while it will work in a 40 magazine, the last shell may not feed.

Price for changing from a 40 to a 9 is $65 plus $50 for two new mags. Or $165 total. For another $65 you can get a .357 barrel and have 3 guns in one. Same grip. same sights, same everything will improve consistency and familiarity.

Thanks for the info. I basically have the same thing with my Sig P250C. It came as a .40 with a .357sig barrel. The barrel for the 9 is smaller. I bought their Xchange kit that came with a new polimer grip, the top slide with a 9mm barrel and one magazine. The xchange and a new "short" trigger was $180. So for a total of $600, I have three guns; 9mm, .357Sig and .40. With a new trigger that took me 20 minutes to change with now previous gun handling experience. If I can get my hands on another FCU, I would have another complete gun.

I think I will do the same with the M&P. I bought some stuff from midway already so I will give them a try, thanks for the tip.
