I put this in the wrong forum the first time. So, here it is again.
Been a while since I've been here but need some help from you knowledgable guys and or gals out there with first-hand experience.
At the latest gun show I was fortunate to find a 5 Screw Pre-Model 28 Highway Patrolman at an affordable price.
I know that the ejector rod threads were reversed on later versions due to coming unscrewed during firing.
Is there a good fix for that other than maybe a little bit of loctite?
Also, the action is pretty heavy. I gave it a good cleaning. There was very old grease on all of the pins and pivot points and contact areas.
The removal of this showed that there is very little wear inside the gun.
After changing the mainspring and rebound spring out to reduced power Wolf springs the double action pull was still quite heavy.
I do have several other models of Smiths to compare to. So, what, where is a good source for things like strain screws and such?
After I smooth up the rebound slide some more I may want to shorten the strain screw but do not want to alter the original.
I shoot a lot of double action and it doesn't have to be featherweight but it's pretty heavy right now.
Thanks in advance. I know there are lots of good people on here that can help.
Look forward to hearing from you all.

Jim ,

I'd like to know where to get spare parts as well for my pre model Smiths ....... " you all " can chime in anytime :D

There is always Numrich for modern (or almost modern) parts. For harder to find parts for older guns, you can try Dave Chicoine (oldwestgunsmith.com); Jack First Gun, and Poppert's Gun Parts. I don't reliably recall the internet addresses for those last two, but you can find them easily with an internet search.

Another pic of my Pre 28.

Regards

Bill

David,

I've bought parts from them way back before the interent was around and they became E Parts. I'll check and see what they have. I'll check the others as well. Thanks for the options.

Bill,

Thanks for the pics. Looks like it's in better shape than mine and mine is a 4 incher, which is what I was looking for. If I could post pictures from my pc I would do so, but have had trouble with the photo posting sites in the past getting hacked.
Maybe their security is better these days.

Thanks "You all"!

All.
How can we have a thread without pictures?

Well, yeah.
Here's mine, first year 4" HP shipped July 20, 1954 to Union Hardware, Los Angeles.

Jim - You're in Phoenix, consider having a chat with Nelson Ford. He's smoothed and tuned a bunch of my old shooters over the years, and I know he's got a ga-bunch of old parts that he might sell. Nice HP, enjoy!

Tom,
Yep, I've done business with Nelson before. Been a while but he does crazy good work. A unique individual indeed. A great guy.
Nice looking piece there.

Thanks and take care out there!
