New Performance Center M&P w/ Ported Barrel

Just me, but I'd like to see the pistol come with the RMR or Deltapoint already installed. After all its a PC gun.

It seems to me that the important point being made here is that Smith and Wesson is seemingly trying to be receptive to a part of the market that wants/needs/is interested in these styles of competition guns. That, rather than acquire a base gun and go from there, spending copious amounts of hard earned money, a person wanting to compete can get a "Performance Center" gun without "selling the car" to get it. Will it be like some specialty smiths' product? Maybe it will. If not, it may be close enough to allow someone interested in competing to start competing without spending a ton of cash to do it.

Alot of manufacturers are doing something similar but Smith and Wesson seems to be taking a step to meet the needs of the shooters in the area that these guns are being built for. I think it is a commendable attempt to be trying to be responsive to its customers. I hope it pays off for the company.

I agree with your assessment. I looks like they are offering things that the market is asking for. I would rather see a core with a threaded barrel so I could add a suppressor, that is more practical to me than porting a 9mm.

MA compliant?

The big question for those of us who reside in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts is will we need to replace the trigger with an Apex? What a shame that S&W manufactures guns in my hometown, but I can't purchase half of what they offer in their stock state.

I have a 3 year old M&P Pro 40. How would these compare in terms of trigger weight and smoothness? Have the improved the grittiness?

Any thoughts on this? I know these aren't out in the wild yet but I'm guessing they will be the same as the CORE series in this respect. So how would my M&P 40 Pro compare to a CORE in terms of trigger smoothness and weight?

They should be identical (or as identical as to machines that are assembled with the same parts can be). A Core goes through the same action "improvements" as a Pro. I can't be much help in regards to stock Pro triggers as all of mine were changed out within the first month for an Apex FSS. The reason I changed is I dislike S&W's hinged trigger.

So I just bought the M&P9 CORE 5" about two months ago....

Should I look at upgrading to this for some reason?

I'm just a once a month few hundred round local range shooter!

I WILL in fact be getting this to go along side my Shield. I've been waiting for this to come around for quite some time.

Pretty cool.

Is there any evidence any of these doo dads translate into better accuracy or tighter groups?

I mean, if it makes me shoot like Miculek, I'm selling the car and buying one tomorrow. :D

It's the Indian not the arrow. :)

These are sort of "interesting" but they won't be a significant factor in USPSA Open Division (only one they're legal for). To be reasonably competitive, you need a much better compensator system, and big stick magazines that are north of 28 rounds....lots of people have reliable 30rd big sticks, and a few have reliable 31 rounders. Even the best reload costs you half a second compared with just moving. At the higher levels, that makes a big difference.

For folks just out for fun, or folks with vision issues, these new offerings should prove to be a reasonably priced option.

They're also legal for Steel Challenge and 3 Gun. The first Magna Ported Core I saw was Jerry Michulek's 3 Gun pistol. Because of the growing popularity of 3 Gun,I suspect S&W is looking more at that market than they are at USPSA Open or Steel Challenge. The classic 2011 Open gun platform is a bit too bulky for the gymnastics that are part of most 3 Gun courses. Plus I don't know many competitors who want to roll around on the ground with a $5K STI open gun.

I got that email a few days ago too. I like the ported slide. Of course I have both PC 1911's with ports so maybe I'm predisposed. I have not found a price on these.

I'd like to see S&W put a better trigger in the PC version. I have the apex aluminum and it's night and day better than stock style trigger.

$812 MSRP Performance Center - Smith & Wesson

My PC 1911 isn't ported. Only the slide is lightened, no ports in the barrel.
e.

saw one in a local "toy" store

I saw a ported 40 with the 4 1/4" barrell. They had it listed at $759. I have to say that it is a very nice looking gun. I have a 5" CORE in 40 Cal and am kind of envious of this. I would love to take one for a test drive to compare. My only complaint with my CORE is the trigger. I still haven't splurged for the APEX trigger. Hmmmm Christmas is coming up. Maybe I can justify it.
