After putting a 13# rebound spring in my model 19 yesterday
I went to the range today and test fired it. I had several misfires.
I did nothing to the main spring and the adjusting screw is all the
way in. I am using reloads with CCI primers. I am not a gunsmith
but I didn't think I would get misfires. In the kit I bought there is
two more springs a 14 & 15 # you think I should try them? Again
this is a target gun not used for self defense. Don

The rebound spring controls only the trigger return and has nothing to do with the force with which the hammer drops. Either replace the hammer spring or bend it slightly in the opposite direction it flexes under tension or try a longer strain screw. Sometimes previous owners alter things and neglect to let anyone know when they part with the gun!

CCI primers have the hardest primer cups and are the most difficult to ignite. Federal primers have the softest cups and are the easiest to ignite. For my S&W revolvers with lightened DA trigger pulls I only use Federal primers. Winchester primer cups are much softer than CCI's but harder than Federal's.

+1
Rebound spring has no affect on ignition.

I've also seen people put a spent primer on the end of the strain screw.
Yup. A spent primer, without the anvil, works well, and I've used spent #11 percussion caps, too, to remedy a shortened strain screw. It usually doesn't take much.

Should you still be having the problem and want to try a new mainspring and strain screw let me know and I`ll send you one of each at no cost to you. Let me know.

Sounds like a previous owner ground the end off the strain screw. Primer cap on the screw or a new screw should fix it. You can also bend the main spring a touch flatter (take some curve out) and it will fix it.

:) Thanks guys for the help. I solved the problem! The
main spring had been bent. I compared it to another
spring and you could see it. Just going to have to leave
the factory spring in for now, I only have CCI primers
[6000] and more than likely can't find Federal primers
nor afford them. Thanks Don

See if anyone has Remington primers. Their cups are a bit softer and easier to ignite than CCI or Winchester...

If your gun is used for defense make sure it will reliably fire the hardest primer out there. It's possible you'll be in a pinch for ammo sometime and not be able to pick and choose primers!
