New Record Price for 44 Magnum Presentation Box?

BOXES

I bought my 4 inch 5 screw 44 magnum years ago when Austin still had gunshows at Auditorium Shores. Not 99% maybe 85, I gave $450 for it. A lot of money for me at the time (early 80s) before internet got popular. A couple of years later at the same location I came across a Colt collectors table that had a bunch of Colt, Ruger boxes etc. In the bottom of the pile was a Black/blue Smith and Wesson 4" 44 Magnum box. When I inquired, the Colt collector said he would never need it and would take $15.00. Almost broke my arm getting my wallet out.

Joe...the earliest clamshell case has a latch the one shown in the center of your photograph. The case dates to May 1960. Photos of this case are shown in Figures 81 and 82 of the book on the 44 Magnum and on pages 210 and 211 of the Smith & Wesson Magnum edition.

Thank you Bill! I have refurbished Mahogany cases with the last latch but never any with the middle latch. Would the middle type latch been used on the early 8 3/8" Mahogany cases(transistion cases) with the liner type of the black cases?

OOPS! I should have looked before I asked the question! The answer is on page 209 and it is "YES"

There were two of them listed on ebay at the same time. I made the one guy an offer of $500, and he came back with $625. I noted that the other one was already over $800, so I bought the one for $625. Not a steal, but I needed it for my first year 6.5 incher.

At least 10 days before another box had been listed for sale at a very reasonable fixed price like $700 with the possibility of making a lower offer.
As usual people ignored it for a long time... I tried to offer a very very low price, but the seller, rightly, rejeted it.
The second box, the one with the record price, to be clear, was listed at auction starting at about a dollar.
As always all eBay users went wild (also I, bidding only as proof because i don't need) on the one at auction making it reach and surpass, immediately, the other one at a fixed price, but despite this nobody made a lower offer on it for a long time....
think people think
firsts 3 pics are of the fixed price box, fourth and fifth pics record price box
