I'd vote for the 686-3 in 4" ... perfection by S&W ... the 6" isn't bad either. Thanks to the forum for the recommend btw. Yep awesome revolver-

Looking at the 686 3" now. OH MY GOD THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL GUN. I'm finding the 3" to be my favorite. It's proportioned just right. They are low $700's new though. That's basically double my budget. Might have to just save twice as long as I had planned and buy it. I cannot get over how nice looking those 686's are.

Might stop into my local store and see if they have any used ones.

This idea has my vote. My 686 3" is one of my favorites. You will never be sorry buying one. You will be sorry if you ever sell it. I just think it is one of those guns that come close to perfection.

Yep. My 3" 686+ is my favorite...ok...CURRENT favorite, followed closely by my 686+ 2.5".
Both are wonderful shooters!

Is there anyone who can explain the differences between the variations of the 686? I've seen 686-1 all the way up through 686-6. I know they are the different variations that Smith put out over the years as they tweaked and improved the 686, I'd just like to know what exactly is different between them.
