rI'm a new s&w owner and new to the forum. Took out my 686-6 today, I purchased it used from the original owner, I was using various reloads that were near 30yrs old, the first few rounds from 25yrds weren't even on the paper, I made some adjustments and it followed accordingly. I still am not shooting the groups that I expected but I think with some more time and work it will be right where it should be. (its a4 but inch barrel). As I mentioned before this is my first S&W, I've always been a colt guy and also primarily autos (1911). But I'm really impressed with the trigger of this gun, I believe its comparible with my Pythons, and there's no comparison to it and my ruger red hawk, period, the smith blows it away.
Guess I'm finding out what I've been missing, and for the cost difference between colts and s&w's that leaves a lots of room to buy ammo. my colts are mainly safe queens,I'm gonna shoot my smith and probably keep my eyes open to pick up a few more revolvers. I have handled a few 1911 style smiths and in that department I will stick to colts, but revolvers are a different story.
I traded a glock 27 for this 686 even, I think I came out way ahead.

Welcome!

Methinks 25yds with a 4" barrel 'right off the bat' is doable, yet ambitious... I can hit a respectable pattern at that range with my 6" 686. But it took practice.

But if you have Colts, then you know what to expect....

Welcome Seanote.

I think you'll find you're not alone in your eclectic firearms taste. Many forum members have other make and types of handguns. Here are some of mine (note the mastodon 1911 and stag horn Colt 45 grips)

You have a great gun for shooting .38, and .357 magnums. I have hit soda cans repeatly at 30 yards with my 686-6 4 inch. Carried it hunting for the last 3 years. Only problem I have ever had was the yoke screw issue which seems to be an issue with the -6 models, a return trip, for the gun back to the factory, and it was fixed.

I carry it mostly in a Bianchi X-2100 Phantom (verticle hold) shoulder holster. They go for about 20.00 on E-bay. I do feel that a feild rig for this gun is best suited in a low ride holster, the grip no higher than the cartridge belt that it is hanging from.

You need to reload, for it cause its just that great to shoot it several hundred times ever time you go out.
You have a great gun for all your .38, .357 needs.

Welcome aboard and Congratulations on your successful trade from a Glock to a S&W 686.
Beautiful gun and great shooters.
Enjoy! 586L-Frame

Welcome Seanote, you've purchased a great revolver. One that should feel somewhat familar in your hand. I think the full lug under the bbl. makes the 586/686 series feel very much like a Python in the hand. I think other dimensions are similar also.

You indicate more S&W's are in your future. May I be so bold as to suggest a 5" model 27, a revolver that many here and other knowledgable shooters consider the ultimate in 357 magnums. Try one, I think you'll be favorably impressed.

Come back now, ya hear!
