New SD40 and Apex Spring Kit

Hello. I am new to the forums and I have very much enjoyed my time here reading forum posts so I decided to register. Now I need some advice!

I currently own a Sigma SW40E (older model not the SW40VE). I am looking to upgrade and have been researching the SD40. The problem is that it appears the SD40 have these new centerpunched sear pins. See thread here for more:

My question is will this prevent me from installing the Apex SD spring kit?

If so is it something that a gunsmith could work around or even Apex themselves? My decision to buy this weapon may be contingent on the ability to install the Apex kit. Any answers are greatly appreciated!

Can you see all the way through the sear pin? If so, It's the same one that I have on mine and I've done the Apex spring kit. The center is hollow to allow for a roll pin punch although I didn't use one, i was just careful.

Mine also has roll pins and an Apex spring kit installed. The SD40 and the SW40E may share heritage and are similar in design these are two different animals. The Apex spring kit was/is designed to work with the stock SD9/SD40. The Sigma kit from Apex is not out yet.

Thanks for the info mlk18. Will be looking to pick up the SD40 soon since I heard they may be discontinued. Don't know if I will keep the SW40E yet. I might sell it if I can get a reasonable price. Thanks again!

Just FYI for anyone interested I contacted Apex about the release of the Sigma spring kit (as I am sure many of you would like to get your hands on that) and was told they should release in less than a month.

I would keep them both personally. The sw40e is getting somewhat rare with its melonite slide and barrel. Good to hear about the apex kit, looking forward to puting one in my sw9e!

Yeah I will most likely keep the SW40E. It was my first pistol from back in the day! I would be excited to shoot it with the Apex kit and a little sear polishing

It's pretty common for the factory to stake internal pins in like that, it's really easy to dislodge a sear pin on one of those housings and they're terribly difficult to install at times.

It's true, the Sigma Spring kit will be out soon. You're hearing this next part first here: The Sigma kit we're going to be releasing will take nearly 2lbs off the trigger on the Sigma, I can't go much lighter without swapping the Sear spring and that's really tough for people to do at home. So, if your gun (like our test bed) has a 12+ lb trigger and you install the kit, it will have a 10.5lb trigger in it. I'm sorry we can't go much lighter at the moment, but it's something. With a slight adjustment to the pre-travel tab, you can use the AEK trigger in the Sigma too.

The spring kit for the Sigma is being packaged and prepared for release now. A trigger specifically for the Sigma and SD is in the works, but I can't say exactly when it will be available just yet. IF I had to guess, I'd say a few months.

Question- I was thinking about trading my SD because I can't shoot it as well as my other pistols. I know that after a range visit, if I shoot 75, 100 rounds and more, my finger just isn't comfortable, even startes hurting. When I shoot my Ruger, even more rounds than that, I am more accurate and have no trigger-finger problem. So the question is-
Do you think if I put the APEX kit into my SD, it would be more accurate? I really like the SD and would rather spend a few bucks changing it, than lose a couple hundred on a trade.

The pull weight reduction helps a lot...IMO. However, I admit, I have a slight bias in that regard.

My thinking is this... If you can spend $27.45 to attempt to upgrade your gun prior to deciding to sell it, you are better off.

Every mm of trigger pull length and every 1/4lb of trigger pull weight increase the chance of user error. That is why strict competition guns have very light and very short triggers. But it is only one part of the equation when it comes to accuracy. Trigger kits are not a viable replacement for good shooting form (and lots of practice) but Apex kit does make the SD trigger much more manageable. That in turn often makes it easier to shoot the gun well. I have an Apex kit in my SD9 and love it.

Flork, does it remove any of the slack prior to firing? My other pistol has the typical long pull but not as long as the SD.
MLK, exactly what I was thinking. And I do practice a lot- that's how I know I'm better with one than the other. I recently joined our indoor range, saves money per trip- but it's gonna put me in the poor-house buying ammo.

The SD Trigger kit doesn't reduce pretravel slack at all, just lightens the trigger pull.

The AEK Trigger will shorten the pretravel and over travel

Sorry for hijacking the thread- temporarily- but Scott, you don't have the AEK for the SD9 yet, right? Looked at the website, only shows the spring kit- or is that it? As you can see I don't know much about this- and will end up having a gunsmith install whichever.

No problem. The only kit we have for the SD is the Spring kit. We decided not to go to the expense of replacing the Sear and Striker with new machined parts because customers would have to spend as much as the gun is worth to get all the upgrades and that's just not economical for anybody.

The SD with the Spring kit and a new trigger is as far as we're going to be going with the SD unless it really takes off like the M&P did.

When is the AEK coming out for the SD line? I already have the spring kit, it has improved the control of the gun by less pressure need to squeeze the trigger.
