I have had mine for a little over a month and am pleased with the accuracy and handling.
Spend a little time reading some of the threads on here where people have problems and then, at least it was for me, when I had one I was familiar with what I or it was doing that caused it.

The safety thing is the one drawback for me. With the SD I'm so used to not having one. Around here it was almost impossible to find one without a thumb safety but I'll learn to live with it.
Don't worry too much about it. Practice carrying it, drawing with it and dry firing it all unloaded of course. I think you'll find out that if you leave the safety off, it is highly unlikely that it will be accidentally activated. I never use it and it's never been inadvertently turned on.

I have a couple shields 9mm and have run a lot of ammo through them without any issues. I go to the range twice a week.

Congratulations. I have a love/hate relationship with my Shield. I am starting to go into love mode this afternoon, though.
Either way, you will enjoy having a very reliable and comfortable to carry pistol.

Congrats. I too am a recent Shield owner , well within a month or so. These are really nice little carry guns. Great sights, easy to conceal, good trigger, nice grip purchase. I hope you are as happy with yours as I am with mine. tom.

Great choice. I've had my Shield 9 for about a year. I never carry it with the safety on. I keep it in a Kydex holster, and the safety is completely covered by the holster, so there's virtually no chance that it'll engage itself. I still thumb sweep by habit (1911 shooter), but the safety's already off.
This is what I personally like about the Shield vs. the 43:
(1) It has a safety. With a safety like the Shield's (flush and flat), I don't carry it with the safety on, but I do like having the safety for when handling the gun at home. I like that the safety doesn't prevent the slide from cycling, so I do safety the gun when unloading or loading it at home. I also keep the safety engaged at home, whether it's unloaded or stored loaded in the safe.
(2) I prefer Smith's Melonite finish to the slightly rougher finish on the Glock.
(3) I prefer the stainless steel slide/barrel of the Smith to Glock's steel.
(4) I prefer the more upright grip angle of the Smith to the Glock (see above -- 1911 shooter here).
(5) Capacity. (In stock form -- I'm not into modifying carry guns, so I don't consider any aftermarket parts there.)
(6) Price. I personally believe that there is no appreciable difference in reliability between either choice, so even if everything else were equal to me (safety/no safety, ergonomics, etc), I'd have to justify to myself that the Glock is worth at least $100 more than a Shield.

For me I choose the Shield over a comparable glock simply because I like S&W, they seem to take care of their customers and for that it seems like a worthy investment. Plus saving $100 or so isn't bad either.
I do like the ergonomics much better than Glock also.
I finally shot it today and it's pretty fun and accurate for it's size. No hiccups after it's first 100 rounds other than the slide not locking after the first magazine... it does seem to eject shells pretty wildly but all in all it's a fun pistol. :thumbup:

I'm a new Shield owner and today was my first range trip with the Shield and it ran perfectly. I fired 150 rounds of Speer Gold Dot LE 124 grain rounds without a hiccup. A little expensive but I figured if I was going to carry this gun I want to make sure it has no problem with the rounds I decide to use. I shot a little to the left of point of aim, but I know it was me, not the gun . Once I adjusted my trigger finger my groups got much better. I found the same thing. My brass was also thrown all over the place.
