As a fellow 9mm Shield owner, you made a good choice! The 9mm variant is fairly reliable and does not have some of the issues plaguing the .40sw variant at the moment.

Greetings from Maine. Welcome aboard! 
I own an M&P 9c and finally found a M&P Shield 9mm two months ago. They have performed flawlessly with not one problem after a few hundred rounds down range. You made a good choice in my opinion.
