The shield has been out for about 4 years now. I've been thinking about buying one for the last month or so. Kind of waiting till shot show was over to see if any new models would come out. I know the performance center shield is new. Would seriously consider it if it didn't have a thumb saftety. Still not sure about a ported gun for self defense. I don't think the shield or most 9mm's have that much recoil to justify it. It does look cool though. Looking at sku # 10086. Night sights, no thumb safety, and 3 mags. The way my luck goes: S&W will come out with an upgraded model next month. The shield seems to be a great little gun. I rented a shield at the range I go to and it performed very well, feels better in my hand than the glock 43 or xds. As far as S&W standing by the old shield? I assume they would. Parts, etc. I mostly own Glock's. Parts and interchangeability is very good. If I need a new recoil spring, they can be found online very easy, wish it was the same for S&W. I'm ready to get a single stack nine. My edc is a glock 30s 45acp. I really like it a lot and still intend on carrying it some, but it is heavy and thicker. I want the smallest, most shootable 9mm I can get. I've shot the glock 43 and it feels ok but isn't as comfortable as the shield. I've read somewhere, that the M&P full size guns may get a makeover soon. Wonder if that appies to the shield also? Buy the 10086? or wait a little longer?

There will always be someone wiling to buy your Shield. At under $400 out-the-door most places, this is not a risky decision. You could sell it for a $100 loss when a new model comes out, or just figure the upgrades aren't really worth the trouble since you have a working gun you like already.

Don't over-think it. Want it? Buy it. It's a gun, not a child.

No better EDC, and I've tried (and bought) many looking for one just like it...then re-sold them and their box o' holsters when I got my Shield 9mm.

I held out on the shield for a long time because I didn't want a manual safety. Now that I have one I still carry my 9c 90% of the time. Only carry my shield when I'm going OWB.

I love my 9mm Shield! I carry it more the my
F/S Ruger SR9E ! The Shield is a great choice IMO....

S&W is partnering with General Dynamics to develop a pistol, said to be based on the M&P line, to submit for the US Army Modular Handgun System trials. S&W stated in their Annual Report that the modifications would find their way into the commercial market products. I was kinda thinking we might see that at the SHOT show, but no sign, so I'm not holding my breath any more.

That said, the Shield, while certainly an M&P, doesn't share a lot of the components of the full size models and they are selling a lot of them just as they are. But who knows what the future holds.

The Shield is a great little gun. IMO the best blend of size, power, and shootability out there. I'd suggest going ahead and buying one and forget worrying about what is over the horizon.

As an aside, I bet you have fun making a decision to buy a computer if you're agonizing over possible future upgrades to a pistol.

I had an original Shield (bought in 2013) and just this past December bought the 10086 model to gain a Shield with no thumb safety and factory installed night sights. For me it's the perfect CC gun. My old Shield is in the safe as a backup or for donor parts.

I'll likely add the Talon Rubber grips, but that's it. The trigger is coming around and I like the idea of using an unmolested factory original gun for my primary self defense weapon. Small enough always carry, but still packs 9 rounds of premium Federal HST 124gr 9mm.

I view the Shield 9mm as the premier concealed carry pistol on the market today. Period.

I continue to get a chuckle out of comments like... "I would get a shield if it didn't have a manual safety". If you don't like it....wait for it.....DON'T USE IT. :)

Awww--it messes up the sleek lines of this superb pistol... :D:D:D

Ducking ;)

I appreciate all the responses. I've decided to order sku 10086. 3 mags with factory night sights. The PC shield looks cool, but not really for self defense situation imho. I rented a shield about 2 months ago, put about 200 rounds through it. I can shoot it just as well as my Glock 19. The shield is just thinner and lighter for CCW and that's what I want.
