I sold my Hi-Power .40 to fund my love of S&W revolvers but found I really can't live without a .40 in my safe.

Found a killer deal on a S&W model 63 and now have enough money left over to replace the 40.

For the same price I can get a new Sigma .40 or a LE trade in 4053 or 4006. This will be a carry gun. So which would you recommend of those three? With the Sigma I can get the extra mags from S&W for free, the 4006 is half a pound heavier but it is all steel and has more capacity than the 4053, the 4053 has the bobbed hammer, consistent trigger pull, and lighter weight...all of which the 4006 doesn't have.

The 4053 is a much better gun for concealed carry than the 4006. It is about 11 ounces lighter than the 4006 and because it is DAO it doesn't have the safety/decocker sticking out of both sides. I have a 4046 that I like but don't carry. I like a full sized grip so I would prefer a 4043 over a 4053. Why weigh yourself down with all of that extra weight? The needs of a civilian carrying concealed are a lot different that the cop on the beat.

It is likely that the third generation guns will maintain their value better than the Sigma even though the Sigma is not a bad gun.

I would go with the 3rd gen if these are your only choices.

You mentioned that you wanted a 40. take a look at the M&P 40c. This is what I carry in the summer months. If you go this way call S&W and request the pinky extension. It is worth it.

I own a Sigma 40F (1st generation) as well as a 4006. Of the two, I prefer the Sigma as it is lighter, holds more ammo, and is definitely softer recoiling (I have arthritis in both hands, so recoil is a real issue.) Unfortunately, neither has any real resale value at this time, but they're a lot of fun to shoot!

Regards,

Dave

The reason I don't get an M&P? The price. These are at least about $150 cheaper. I really don't have a taste for polymer but when I saw the price of the Sigma and handled one I started re-thinking that.

Yeah they do tend to be pricey. I had a Sigma 40 before this M&P. It was all over the target.

This M&P is the most straight shooting compact I have ever shot.

I'm not too crazy about Poly either but for the concealed carry, this is perfect.

Of your 3 choices, the New Sigma is by far the best value in all of guns. They can be had for under $300 plus rebate mags. Otherwise, my choice would by M&Pcompact of the caliber of your choice. Mine, by the way would be .357Sig.

I voted for the 4053, because it's a lot lighter than the 4006. For carry, light weight is very valuable. I have never shot a Sigma, so I'm hesitant to recommend it.

I don't do 40's but have both a Sigma and a M&P in 9mm and like them both.. I must say that if the M&P came first I wouldn't have bought the Sigma..Not that I dislike the Sigma but the M&P offers so much more..
If you can, try them both and then decide..

IMHO, the 4053 is a much nicer gun than the Sigma, or the M&P.

In my experience the 3rd generation semi autos are more accurate, and have better triggers than either the Sigma, or the M&P.

The 4053 is also a better looking gun than either the Sigma, or the M&P, both of which I find to be butt ugly pistols

. Good luck with your decision. Regards 18DAI.

Ok...made my decision. I went with the 4006. Both the sites I posted this question gave the victory to the 4006 (albeit not quite as overwhelming as the Celtics whipping of the Lakers!). What really got me was I found it at my local shop and the guy gave me a good deal on it. I decided I was more comfortable buying the one I could actually see and handle. I have bought on the 'net many times but I was able to see pics of the actual gun. None of the sites I was looking at were able to give me that luxury.

I ALMOST went with the Sigma but just couldn't go for the polymer over the all steel gun. I know they are great but I just enjoy the steel better.

I got it home and gave her a good scrubbing and she really cleaned up nicely. Don't have time for pics this evening but you all know what a stock 4006 looks like. BTW...this one has the fixed sites. I HATE the look of the adjustable with the big "ears".

You are going to like that 4006! Here something to watch for: a 4003. The light weight version of your very fine pistol. Everything is the same save for the alloy frame. It weighs about a half pound less. If you carry for long periods of time, that half pound can make a big difference.

Thats probably what I would have done.
Myself, I'd rather have a 4006 than a .40
Sigma any day if I got to choose.

I voted for the 4006 out of the three choices. I own and carried a 4003 on duty for years. I love 3rd Gen Smith's and the 4006 will last you a lifetime. It has a better trigger than the other two in my opinion.

A couple of years ago two working companions bought two of new Sigmas "on sale". Their accuracy was that of a belly gun and had the most horrible trigger pull of any gun that I'd/they'd ever felt. Anyone that shot them had the same probs so it wasn't the shooters. Even after trigger work, the trigger was totally unacceptable. One guy traded his rather quickly and the other man never mentioned his again. Maybe you'll get lucky and get one of the "good ones". This old man would be extremely wary. Extremely.

I don't think the Sigma is really a bad
pistol. The price is right anyway.
But saying that, if I could have the 4006
for the same appx price, I'd jump on it vs
the Sigma any day.
I just prefer all metal pistols if I had a
choice, and like some say, the trigger is
likely to be better.
Another aspect is the future value.
20-30 years from now I would think the 4006
would be worth a lot more than a Sigma.
I don't think you'll ever see a mass collector
appeal for plastic pistols..
Well, unless you are a Glock fan..
Anyway, I think he made a good choice going
with the 4006.

ya...the thought of what will I still be using and appreciating 5-10 years from now DID enter into my thinking. I know you can get good prices on S&W steel frame auto's now but as they go by the wayside I wonder if they will become the autoloader version of the "pre-lock" revolvers.

We may lament not buying more of these LE trade-ins when the supply dries up like the once plentiful supply of good clean Mauser 98's did and are now much harder to find and much pricier to acquire.

Get the M&P 40. Pass on both the 4006 and the SIGMA. Better yet, get the S&W 1911!!
